How long did you wear your baby? With which wrap?

Hi,

I'm just wondering how long you were able to wear your baby.  I have a carrier right now, but it's not the most comfortable and it's a pain to get him in it.  I'm considering buying a wrap, but since he's already 2 months old, I'm wondering if it's worth the money.

Is it easy to take your baby in and out of the wrap?  I'm flying to Germany alone with him when he's 5 months old and I think wearing him might be the easiest option.

Any advice and input is greatly appreciated.  TIA!

Re: How long did you wear your baby? With which wrap?

  • I still occasionally wear my 2.5 year old. Not often, but occasionally. My 9 month old gets worn several hours per day still. I like wraps, but you may also look into getting either something like an ergo or beco, or a meitei.

  • Ditto ghm's advice.  I wear kiddo (who is 19 pounds or so) for several hours a day in a woven wrap - very comfortable.  If you do go with a wrap, you'd want a woven not stretchy one at this point as it would be more supportive.  Mei tais (like the babyhawk) and soft structured carriers (like the ergo, beco, pikkalo) are other great options.  All of these can be used for front or back carries and will work through toddlerhood.
  • 19 months?

A friend had a wrap made for me after she was a year. We never did get the hang of using it.  So we just used the Ergo.  From birth on.  They're not pretty, but they're comfy and very functional.  DH used it as much as I did.

  • I still wear my 13 month old all the time. We use an Ergo and a Maya Wrap. I love them both. I use the Maya Wrap for quick trips and the Ergo for longer outings. My DH likes the Ergo as well.
  • I really liked a simple sling for travelling--I got a Slinglings sling off of Mamabargains for about $15, and it folded up small enough to fit in my diaper bag if DS (home at 11 months) decided to get down (or ride in a shopping cart while we're out, etc).

He's now 19 months and 26 lbs, so I don't wear him as often--partially because he's the busiest kid EVER and won't be still that long. DS#1 is significantly smaller and I wore him until he was about 2.5--and weighed about 25 lbs.

  • I wear my 18 lb. 5 monther in a woven wrap (a Vatanai), and it's super comfortable (though I'm still not very good at getting it on, sadly).

I'd like to get a Pikkolo (as I figure it'd be so much easier), but I'm afraid my husband will think I'm crazy. We already own a Hotsling and a Baby Bjorn!

  • I wore DS in a Sleepy Wrap until about 6 months, he was 21.5 lbs. Then I got a Baby Hawk and I am still wearing DS in that. He is about 25 lbs now.
  • I lost my Maya Wrap when DD was 6 months and was lost (during airport security, the metal rings set off the alarm, but I think the new ones are made of a different material - I'll be testing them later this month) until I could get a new one, esp. since I was still BFing. Once you get the hang of it it's pretty easy to use. I've been using the stroller more often recently, but still use the wrap a good bit of the time. The Maya can be used as a front, hip/side, and back carrier, so I definitely think it's a good investment. I'm also lucky, however, b/c DD only weighs 20lbs. If you think about how much we carry our babies in our arms, no matter how much they weigh, a carrier certainly helps take some of the strain off your arms.
