Anyone pregnant with asthma

I've had pretty severe asthma since I was little. Prior to being pregnant I was on the highest dose (500/50) of Advair and would use my albuterol maybe once per day. Since I knew Advair was a category C I thought I wanted to try something else during my pregnancy. My pulmonologist suggested Pulmicort which is a catergory B. I've been on it for about 10 weeks and my asthma is gradually getting worse. I'm using my albuterol at least 4 times per day and don't feel like the Pulmicort is working. I know if I go to my dr they will say to go back on the Advair but I'm worried about the risk of being on it for the baby. What did you use for your asthma when you were pregnant?

Re: Anyone pregnant with asthma

  • I had a very similiar conversation with my OB. She told me that while they can't be entirely certain the effect of asthma meds on unborn babies, but they can be certain a mom not breathing is hurting the baby. Additionally, she said if I'm feeling it the baby has long since been feeling it. I continued to take my meds and kept things under control until delivery, which at that time they had me on oxygen.

Good Luck! But definitely talk to your OB about it.

  • Thanks!  I just started taking my Advair again because I have a cold and it's making it even harder to breath and the Pulmicort was doing nothing. Hopefully the Advair will kick in within a few days. I have an appt. coming up so I'm going to address this again then.
