I love the look and just bought a pair, but I'm not sure how to properly rock them. What kind of shirt and, more importantly, what kind of shoes??

No, I don't.

I would wear any shirt and for shoes either 'dressy' sneakers (not sure if you know what I mean - PUMA style I guess) or flats if you are going out.

I really just stick to a tee and Converse style shoe w/ these sort of jeans.

mine are a bit slimmer on the bottom and I have worn flats, flip flops, and even a wedge heel.  I have worn tanks, funkier shirts, and have done a ruffled blouse.

Maybe I'll try it when I go to LA later this month so I can look ultra "hip."

i just ordered similar jeans from aeropostale, style-kylie boyfriend jeans and prob. waaay tooo young for me but i thought they were adorable.  i was thinking a button down shirt  or cardigan with flats.
