Originally my pediatrician's office said it'd be no problem to break up my son's MMR shots into three separate vaccinations. They said they'll call me as they ordered each one and I could come in for the shot.
Three weeks later they called and said the company will no longer order the shots separately because the CDC has found no evidence to support a benefit to breaking them up.
Will I encounter this problem everywhere or is it just the company my pediatrician orders from. If the CDC says the shot shouldn't be broken up, will all locations/pediatricians stop offering that service? Have any of you broken up this particular vaccination?
Re: How to get the MMR shot broken up?
I remember the dr sears website saying it might become available in 2010/2011. Maybe poke around that website and see (askdrsears.com). I know this problem is everywhere, as they have stopped producing the separate shots altogether. The question is if they will ever be available again.
I thought it was interesting that even dr sears has a blog about how it's ok to give them all together as soon as they stopped producing the MMR separately. It made me wonder why he pushed for them to be separate int he first place, if all of a sudden it's fine to get them together... FWIW, we gave the MMR at 12 months and all was fine:)
The thing that pisses me off about this, is that while TTC, I may have needed a rubella shot- what are they going to do, just give potential pregnant women another MMR when they don't need all components?
I also wonder how long they studied the alleged benefits of splitting them up.
I'm pretty sure I'm going to hold off for a while to see if they change their minds, and if not, I'll get K the MMR before she goes to kindergarten.

I got a rubella shot in the hospital after DS was born (they never said anything about getting a whole MMR again). Apparently the R in my MMR shots didn't last.
Yes, that's what they used to do..but recently the manufacturer has said they will no longer produce them separately. I found it particularly strange because of lots of women who plan to become pregnant/ just had children just need the rubella vaccine. I think they would've told you if it was the MMR not just the R.
Gotcha. I kinda skimmed the OP & missed the recently-3-week part. The downside of being on here while trying to cook, I guess:)
City - yup 23 weeks but feel like I'm 53 weeks due to my son's inability to sleep! I'm exhausted.
Unfortunately we utilize daycare and they require the shot, although I think I'll delay it as long as I can. I'm not overly concerned about it, but since I spent a lot of visits at the pediatrician's office carefully spreading out the other immunizations, I hate to just bust into three at once now.
Ironically, the vaccines were likely combined due to customer demand, as people want their children to have as few shots as possible.
I've also heard it's the measles vac that isn't available, but I don't know whether that's true.
