Preemies

Swaddling you preemie

We were told in the NICU never to swadle because it has been linked to SIDS. The only time we swaddle Dylan is when we wash his hair before putting him in the bath. He loves being swaddled and I wish we could do it more. What have you been told about swaddling?

Re: Swaddling you preemie

  • We swaddled Aubrey for quite some time.  Guess I wasn't worried about it though because we have an Angel Care monitor.  Even when she did break free, she wasn't active enough to possibly get the blanket near her face.  I can't imagine how little sleep we would have gotten if we hadn't swaddled her!
  • I always swaddled DS.  They swaddled him in the NICU as well.

  • We were told swaddling is more effective and needed for preemies (warmth, security). We swaddled all the time until he was 3-4 months old. If you're worried about the blanket covering the mouth, maybe try a "swaddle me" blanket? Those are pretty fool-proof.
  • We never even tried it! He didn't seem to like being confined.  He hated the Halo sleepsack things.
  • I never heard of that. ?I guess maybe the fear is that the blanket will slip over mouth & nose? ?We used a swaddle me blanket on Claire until she was almost 7 months old. ?No joke! It was the only way she'd sleep. ?Keira hated being swaddled and slept best without.

  • We swaddled both babies for a long time. I did have a NICU nurse tell me that but she also wasn't a mom that knew what new products were out there like the Swaddle Me's and the Miracle Blanket. I mean the way they swaddled my kids in the NICU I could see why she said it. Also I think you want to make you're not overheating the baby.

We also have sensors on the bed (BabySense V) so that offers another level of comfort.

  • right now he is swaddled in his incubator and they say it helps them stay calm which we have seen to be true. they just always make sure the blanket it tucked properly but he loves it
  • DS was constantl swaddled in the NICU and we continued it as best we could.  We failed "swaddling 101" at our Birth and Baby Care class.
  • Weird! That's the exact opposite of what we were told. Our NICU swaddled DD every day, showed us proper technIque and explained that swaddling had been linked to a DECREASED risk of SIDS. We do it most nights, although it's been so warm lately, we make sure not to use our fleecey SwaddleMe's.
