Breastfeeding

Is this normal?

When I pump, my milk comes out really quickly at first and then slows way down. I'll get 1/2 an oz or so in the first 2 minutes, and then it slows to barely a trickle over the course of 7ish minutes. If I turn the pump off and back on again, it gets a bit faster again. I didn't think it would be SO slow after the let down cycle.

I had a breast reduction so I'm really paranoid about my supply Smile Thanks!

Re: Is this normal?

  • Normal.  I've never turned off the pump and restarted it, but I've noticed that when LO stops and starts again it looks like she is swallowing faster again.

  • I have the same experience when I pump- a rush of milk, then is slows to a trickle.
  • Oh good, I'm glad :) Like I said, I'm super paranoid about my supply.... we had a horrible lactation consultant who tried to tell me (after only a phone call) that Em was starvingCrying. Our pediatrician actually laughed when I asked if Emerson showed any signs of being underfed, lol. She was so alert during her appointment

I think I'm going to start taking fenugreek just in case

  • I have a similar experience where I get a rush, then my milk stops and then it starts again.  I never shut off the pump, but let it keep going and I will get a second let down.

  • It's normal. If you keep pumping you might get a second letdown without having to turn it off/on. I usually get a lot at first, then it slows down, practically stops for a couple mins, then I get a second letdown around the 12-15 min mark.
