TTC after 35

Should I have a HSG?

Hi, my doctor said it was up to me if I wanted to get the HSG xray done or not. I had my first loss last week, so it is all still a little overwhelming to me. So forgive me if my questions are a little silly, My doc. said if I had this test we could see if I really do have a bicornate usterus and what kind. He does not feel at this point that was the reason I had a m/c. We had only been trying a month when I got pregnant.  My doctor was more for me waiting and trying again.

We plan on waiting until I get my first cycle then trying. My question is would you have this test done or try a month or two and see what happens? Also I have no history of any other problems and had always been regular.

If I do have the test does that mean you are not able to try for that month as well? Was not sure about radiation or anything like that.. Like I said this is all so new to me and now being 35 everyone starts telling me all sorts of things I was not aware of or really wanting to know.

Thanks ladies!

Re: Should I have a HSG?

  • My OB did not think an HSG was a first step for me.  I got pregnant last year and had a m/c and d&c.  I got pregnant the 2nd month after trying.  So, it was pretty easy that time.  When I finally went to the RE last month, they sent me to have one because it's pretty standard for them.  Nothing showed up wrong on the HSG.  So, I would have to say that my OB was right.

I'd wait a few more months before you go the HSG route, personally.

  • Well, the HSG answers a big question: do you have clear tubes. AND also in your case, about the bicornate uterus.

The test takes about 2 minutes, and they do in early in your cycle before ovulation. I know many people who go on to get KU that very cycle.

So I can't see why not, but I will say based on how long you've been trying, I have no idea why they would order one so soon. Odd .

    GL with whatever you decide.

  • Usually drs wait 6 months for the test, but I would say if it puts your mind at ease and your dr is willing to do it than go for it. It's quick and done early enough in your cycle before O (CD6-10 I think), that you can try the same month. And, as Cathy said, it increases your fertility by flushing out the tubes and giving the sperm and egg a clear path. Good luck.
