A new gtube first

This morning when I went to give Olivia her medicine before starting her pump I couldn't get it to go in.  It would not go down the tube at all.  I thought it was the Prevacid solutab getting stuck at the end of the tube.  After taking it out, squeezing, etc. I put it back in and still nothing.  So I decided to hook up the pump instead and do the meds later.  Well then that didn't work.

So I took out her mickey button to check it and discovered that the entire tube (the part in her stomach) was clogged with Prevacid.   I'm not sure if it has been building up or was what because she gets fed 20 hours of the day and it hasn't been leaking out or anything.   Totally strange.     I guess I'll have to try and be better about letting it dissolve more before putting it in.  Has that happened to anyone else?

In a true test of multi-tasking skills I managed to put the new tube in while talking to my boss on the phone :)

Re: A new gtube first

  • Wow, I'm mega impressed.  I'm terrified of the tube coming out and don't know how you managed to do that to begin with, let alone feel comfortable putting the tube back.

We did have this problem a whole lot with the GJ tubes.  It took a great amount of force on the plunger of the syringe with a tight grip on where the syringe connected to the GJ tube port so it didn't burst out.  I've only had this problem a couple of times with the G tubes and even then it's really with the crimp in the adapter we use where the clamp lock is.  But at least now I know of someone else who's had this problem because the GI didn't believe us and had no idea what I was talking about when I tried to describe it to them.

Oh, and kudos to you for the multi-tasking.  That's very impressive.

  • The mickey button is SUPER easy to replace.   Once you do it one time - you'll be totally fine.
  • Weird! I wonder how long it had been going on? I bet she hasn't been getting her total dose of medicine, either.

When Robbie was on the solutabs, I gave them to his orally, so I never had that trouble.
His nexium comes in a powder that you mix with water and is supposed to set up into a jello like substance, but I add the water and shoot it in quickly so it doesn't have time to set up, then flush with water. I find it a lot easier than the prevacid. Not that Robbie minded the prevacid, but inevitably he'd move his tongue wrong and I'd shoot it everywhere I'd fine purple speckles in his neck folds the next day. (I gave it to him at night.)
