Baby Names

New -bet you didn't know these where girl names

Just today I heard of an Aiden as a girl.  My friend's daughter was named Toby and I have 2 friends on myspace with daughters named Trey...I never thought of those as unisex!!  Everyday is a surprise.

  • There's a Nestie with a girl Aiden.

I like boy names for girls, so while I hate all the names you mentioned, it's not because they're used for a girl.

  • I still don't think they're girl names.

  • Even weirder: Allison and Stacey were originally BOY names. Someone, somewhere had to be the first to name a girl Allison, then many moms followed suit for centuries until no mother would dream of naming their football star Allison today!!

More and more girls have "boy" names. I think it's cool. We're turning the tide. LOL

PS Wasn't there a girl named Ryan on the first American Idol???

But for the people who are having boys it sucks. I don't want my son to have a "girly" name and now so many good boy names are being used on girls. Ryan is the perfect example.

  • The next generation will not know that Mackenzie,  Madison, Addison, or Hayden were boy names.  I love unisex names.  My son is Mackenzie and my girl is Grayson.  I love hearing new names I never thought of before used for the other sex.. I think Mackenzie is the new Stacy.  You totally forget it can be used for a boy and are surprised when you find it is a boy.  I have always loved Ashley for a boy also.  I knew one in high school.

I'm really okay with the thousands and thousands of boy names left to choose from. ?It's not like this is a new phenomenon.

  • In a little while there will be no such thing as a boy name.  I seem to remember someone on here with a girl named Garrison and another with a Grayson.

Has anyone named their daughter Joshua, Jonathan or William?

Logically, I totally agree with you. ?But honestly I am always a bit upset to hear someone naming a girl Charlie, or one of the other boy names that I love. ?I think naming a girl is so much easier than naming a boy, so people should just leave the boy names to the boys. ?But logically I know that is silly.?

  • Husband has friends who named their daughter Elliot after Elliot Smith. It would have been their son's name, had she been a boy.

I had no problem finding a boy name, btw. I'm not bothered by this trend at all.

  • I hate the trend
  • I have a cousin in her 20's who is named Aidan. There is also a poster on 12-24 who has a toddler named Aidan. I still  basically think of it as a boy's name though.

Me too! I know a woman named Toby, but wouldn't think even fans of boy names for girls would choose Trey!

  • Well my daughter is named Aiden, and my other daughter is Tristan, but I do not think that Toby is unisex, I think that some boy names can go both ways but not all. Aiden to me sounds more girly than boyish, and Tristan to me sounds like Kristin, but potatoe patatoe.

  • One of my friends just named her baby girl Jefrie! Yes that's right Jefrie! Now that's definitely not a unisex name! Ug!

Sorry, but Aidan and Tristan are boy names, even if that's what you chose for your daughters.
  • My flower girl's name was Aidan, but I still think of it as a boy name.

I went to HS with a girl named Justin.

  • My whole family has unisex names. I think it's totally fine. I have a female friend from high school named Kyle. I find unisex names more appealing that the million Madisons, Emmas, and whatevers.
  • I don't like it...and I wouldn't ever use a traditionally boy's name for a girl and vice-versa.

I am all for people naming their kids whatever they want, but I would never want my child to have to go through life with people thinking they were the opposite sex when people read their names.

    JMHO.

You are so money and you don't even know it.

This.  My sister has a unisex name (ironically, I actually think it works better for a girl)  but she's spent her whole life HATING it.  She would always sadly say "the only people who have my name are boys and dogs".  Now that she's grown up and has met a few other girls with her name, she's gotten over it; but she has been on job interviews where people have thought she was a boy and it's been very awkward for her.  And she gets mail addressed to "Mr." and it annoys her every time.  If you give your daughter a boy's name you're setting them up for that.

I have two girls with boy/unisex names (Alex & Taylor).  I feel that it is still a male dominated workforce and if they get an interview because their appear on paper to be male, than so be it.  I think it is important to raise girls to be strong and independant regardless of their name.  My Alex will also have another Alex in her class at school, we already have playdates with her.

That is why I named my daughter Grayson because I want people to think that.  It seem inpowering to me that her name is a boys name and she is cute being called Gray and I call her Silver when she is a meany..
