Parenting after a Loss

your thought on a swing?

hi moms!

DH and I are trying to figure out if we should buy a swing or not for our baby girl...she won't be here for a couple more weeks but Im going to BRU tomorrow to finish getting everything...

Do you use your swing often? Is it worth it?? We have an awesome boucy seat so I dont know if we need both. Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Re: your thought on a swing?

  • We used our swings all the time I couldn't have imagined life w/out one.  We did not have a bouncy seat at all.  I know that some babies do not like the swing though but both of mine loved it.  Maybe you could find one on Craig's list that way if your baby doesn't love it you won't spend the full price on it.

  • i dont think i would have survived the first 3-4 months without our swing. some nights, that is where andrew would sleep.
  • We were in the middle-- didn't love it, didn't hate it, but I was glad she had it for the days when she did like it.  I just posted some funny swing pictures in my blog if you have a chance to pop over:)

  • We hardly ever used ours (maybe 5x). M just wasn't happy in it. She did love the bouncy seat though.
  • I used my swing ALL the time, it was a lifesaver! We got the FP My Little Lamb DS loved it.

  • We used our swing ALL.THE.TIME! In the first three months, I don't know what we would have done without it...it was the only thing that calmed DD down when she was colicy...it was definetly worth it for us.
  • I should add that DH's cousin gave us her swing, so we did not purchase it ourselves.  Have you considered buying one from a consignment shop?  If I was doing it over again, I would have bought more second-hand.

  • Both of mine hated the swing but love the bouncy seat!  THe nice thing about the bouncy seat is that you can move it around the house very easily and the swing not so much!
  • I think you might benefit from having one, but I wouldn't buy new.  See if you can borrow one froma friend/family member or buy a gently used one.  We used the bouncy seat all the time, and then we ended up being given a swing from a friend who's baby outgrew it.  So we use the swing, but it's not something critical for us.  If we were buying new, I would have gotten (and registered for but didn't get) a travel swing because they are smaller and, you know, portable.

  • I know for us I wanted to buy/get everything new but boy if I could do it all over again I wouldn't have been so picky.  The swing is one of those things I wish I would have gotten used - she didn't love it but didn't hate it.  Once she started crawling - a couple weeks ago - we didn't have space to keep it in the living room so it's now down in the basement.  Honestly, she liked her bouncy seat more.  The swing is one of those things we could have done with out but even if she was one of those kids who loved it we could have gone with a hand me down or one from a consignment store or mom to mom sale.  GL!
  • It's so hard to say before the baby comes - if I were you, I'd wait and buy it if it becomes necessary. That beng said, my DS slept in his swing until he was 5 months old, so it was worth every penny. He had bad reflux and needed to be kept at an incline, and he's a motion junkie, so it worked great for us. And the bouncy seat does serve a separate purpose - you can bring it to whatever room you're in to have a safe, fun place for your baby to play. HTH!
  • DS LOVES his swing.... I don't  know what we would do without it!!!

We actually have two, a regular swing and a travel swing, and we use both! The travel swing is nice because we can move it from room to room.

Lately he will only sleep in the swing or bouncer, so for us those are both must have items :)

  • I did not buy a swing for my dd, and was glad that I did not, because she hated them.  I used her bouncy chair a lot.

My sons, however both LOVE the swing, and I'm so glad we got the one we did.  We have the FP papasan style two way swing from 3 yrs ago (they still make it, just in a slightly different style).  I liked having it new, it was totally a worthwhile investment for us.  And it had to be the cradle swing, nothing else would have worked as well.

Carter loved to swing side to side only, and Kian prefers front to back, but does enjoy both.  The swing has been absolutely indespensible with them (especially for naps, they both sleep great in their beds all night, but are poor nappers.  I wish there was a toddler version for Carter, lol).

  • It seems like swings are really hit or miss; some babies love them, other hate them.  Do you have a friend from whom you could borrow a swing?  I'm glad we were able to do that, because it saved us $120 since DD was not a fan.
  • We got one from my BIL. It was only a year or so old and it's been a lifesaver!!!! She also likes the bouncy chair too.
  • a swing was very necessary for us.  allie took lots of naps in there and still does!

This. We didn't have one and never felt like we needed it. Finally put him in one when he was a few month old and he freaked out.

  • I think it's either love it or hate it.  Kiran never used his swing or his bouncy seat.  He would lounge in his Boppy pillow, and we ended up with two of those!

  • Get a swing.. If i had it to do again I would get a swing before I got a bouncy seat or even a PnP.. My DD slept in her swing exclusively for about 2 weeks.. She still to this day naps in it sometimes or if we are having trouble getting her to sleep, or right now, she's awake but happy hanging out in the swing..  we got the FP one that swings both ways.. get one.

  • We got a swing and a bouncy seat from a friend and I'm glad we did since Stink really doesn't like either.  She would scream bloody murder if we put her in the swing and would sit in the bouncy seat for about 20 minutes a day.

I put her in the swing recently, since it's just taking up space in our dining room and while it wasn't the horror it originally was, she still wasn't thrilled to be in it.

She spent most of the time on a blanket on the floor. Or being held.

  • DD hated the back and forth swing but my mom got the papasan that swings side to side also and she LOVED it. I totally recommend it.
  • every. single. day. We use the thing, to say the least. Once he started getting bored with things, it was nice to have a little of everything to cycle him around to (swing, bouncy seat, play mat, entertainer, bumbo, back to swing.....etc.). We will be retiring it soon because in the last few days he's learned how to throw his weight around and he might just be able to hurl himself over the side - even strapped in. But we have used the swing almost daily since the first week he was home. We have a full size swing, if that matters much.

  • oh, and if you get one; try to find one that plugs in rather than eating up D batteries (or buy rechargeable D batteries online). Our swing plugs in, thank goodness. Our mobile ate 4 D batteries in a week...so right away I ordered some rechargeables from allbattery.com or something like that. They were pricey $65 for 8 batteries and a charger, but they last a LOT longer than standard Ds and we've probably more than made up the money because of that. These rechargeables lasted over 1.5 months with one charge.
