Hostess gift - follow up

Okay, so my original post got bumped down to page 2.

As far as the hostess gift goes, should I present it to the hostess in front of everyone to show my gratitude, or should I just give it to her in private .. if so, before or after the shower?

Well I remember I went to a rehearsal dinner once where the bride gave out gifts to her bridesmaids and she gave her stepmom this gorgeous bracelet, in front of everyone with a little speech and everything, it was really heartfelt, I thought it might be nice to do it that way ... :-)
