Anyone ever have coyotes in their neighborhood?

We have tons of woods in our neighborhood.  We are a new development.  We can hear the coyotes, very loud at night.  Our neighbor had his dog chased by 4 of them very early one morning on their walk.

I wasn't nervous about them before because we don't go out with the kids at night.  Then my mother says that they will come during the day too if they are hungry and to be careful with the kids.  Is this true?  Has anyone seen coyotes during the day?  Will the town do anything about them or only if they attack?

  • I grew up in Santa Barbara and we had TONS of coyotes around. They do come out during the day. It is rare for them to attack people, but it definitely happens (be more worried about pets - I know many, many people who lost pets to coyotes). If you have coyotes around just make sure your watch your kids in the yard, they should be fine.

If a coyote (or any animal) ever attacks a person, animal control does attempt to catch/potentially put down that animal. In general though I don't know what they do to dissuade coyotes.

  • We have some in our current neighborhood and TONS in our old neighborhood.

You do have to watch for them. Sick/injured coyotes have attacked children here. Time of day doesn't really matter - I've seen them at all hours.

In general, they're pretty skittish of people, but sometimes they're not. Some of them can jump pretty tall fences, too.

I guess a lot depends on your yard. I doubt your kids are playing unsupervised in the woods. You might call your local fish&game or something like that. If a coyote is known to be stalking people here, they kill it.

We don't change our behavior because of coyotes - still take evening walks, et. But if I knew some were stalking dogs and weren't afraid of people, I'd probably stop taking walks for a while.

  • My parents own 60 acres and it is 90% woods.  The only area that isn't is where their house is.  I grew up in that house from 6 months old through college.  We had tons of coyotes in the woods around us, we could often hear them howling at night.  But we also had a dog and an outdoor cat all while I was growing up and NOTHING ever happened to them.  The only time we had an issue was when my dad had killed a deer during hunting season and it was hanging in the huge tree in front of the house.  My dad was working nights and the coyotes were going CRAZY out in the woods, we could not see them, just hear them.  My uncle had to come over with his truck to transport the deer to the taxidermy place.  I was really young and I just remember sitting in the doorway with my dog and cat watching my mom and my uncle load the deer into the truck and stuff.

Other than that instance though we have never had a problem.  HTH!!!

  • We live "in the woods", we have almost 11 acres.  Like tanzer said we here them fairly regularly but we never see them, well I take that back DH has seen coyotes when he is hunting from his tree stand.
