Flameful vent. People who refuse to evaculate during fires.

It's wildfire season in southern california. We have at least 3 fires going right now. There are pockets of people who refuse to evacuate. Then they get stuck. Then the firefighters have to go rescue them.

This pisses me off. There is a reason they ask you to leave. I can not imagine the devistating reality that your house could burn. We lived through fires 5 years ago about 3 miles from our house. Drivng through the neighborhoods post-fire was awful. Butfuck people, by staying behind, you are putting dozens of people's lives at risk. It seems so selfish.

My flame is that I think if you do not evacuate when told, you should be personally responsible for all costs related to your rescue.

  • Yep.  I feel the same way about hurricane people on the barrier islands where my parents live.  Stupid.

and how much is a fireman's life cost to save yours?

    They should not be rescued...

  • Yes I totally agree. I feel the same way about severe hurricanes and those that stay behind to "ride it out."

I was going to say they should not be rescued, but that seemed way flameful. I agree. I think that part of being personally responsible is that you know open yourself up to lawsuits from fireman's families for wrongful death.

I really think if you don't evac, you should sign a waiver that releases the fire departments, county, state and fed agencies from any wrong doing, so it bascially says you are SOL.

  • As the wife of a firefighter/EMT, I really don't appreciate it when people refuse to evacuate in emergency situations.

    Agreed

  • I just don't understand the mindset ... but I also have never lived through that kind of imminent (sp) danger.  When I see ppl on TV and they didn't even get their photos out on time, I'm puzzled.  Do the fires turn that quickly?

  • couldn't agree more. ?Watching these idiots on TV talking about how they're staying no matter what is infuriating. ?And I definitely agree with whoever said, in this situation, I really don't think they should be rescued when it could endanger a firefighter's life. ?I hate to imply that one person's life is worth more than the other's, but....

If the fires are wind-driven (for us, the Santa Ana winds are ferocious and really horrible for fires), they can turn that fast. After the fires a few years ago, we put all of our important papers, passports, etc and wedding album in a large fire-proof safe.  If by chance we aren't home, I'd hope the stuff would survive. If we are home, I can dump the stuff in my car in one heap and go, not running around the house. I also have my backup drive in there w/ all of our pictures.  The smart evacuees in past fires had their cars filled, ready to go at a moment's notice.

  • A couple of years ago we had some severe flooding in our area and a lot of the roads were closed. A woman decided to drive her SUV through a flooded street and low and behold, she got stuck when her car died. She was rescued by boat by the local fire department. She was ordered to pay restitution of all costs involved with the "rescue" and made an example of locally. But I have to tell you, the most embarrassing punishment she received was in the form of the photo used by the local paper to explain the incident ...

    front page, above the fold,

a very large color close-up of this woman's rear end

    with a headline about stubborn residents.(stubborn mules = a$$es)

    I absolutely died of laughter.

I hate to imply one person's life is worth more than another, BUT the difference is--the ones who refused to leave put themselves in that position. The fireman should have to fight the fire, not rescue the stubborn a$$ that refused to leave when told to.
