When to make the switch from Whole milk to 2%?

I forgot to ask the pedi at our last appt, but what age do people generally make the witch from Whole milk to 2% for dc's?  DD really doesn't seem to care if her milk is whole or 2% but I'm not sure if she should still be getting the extra fat and calories....

Thanks!!

  • Our pedi said to switch at 2 yo. My DD never noticed the difference.

  • I think it all depends on the kid (and the pedi).  My DS is small for his age, and at his 2 yr appt, his pedi recommended keeping him on whole milk for another year.  But my niece, who is pretty average, was told to switch to 2% at 2 years.
  • Ditto on the after 2 years.
  • Oh crap! DD had her 2 y.o. WCE today and I also forgot. Ugh.

Anyone else hear that we should be switching from whole to nonfat at 2 y.o.? I think those are the newest guidelines, but probably lots of pedi's aren't following them. It was something about their growth being much slower now and them not needing the extra fat calories any more. Nonfat is supposedly just as nutritious.

  • I just called pedi's office and they feel kids need whole milk until they're 3 y.o.

Not sure I'm gonna follow this. She drinks milk like it's going out of style. I honestly think I'll switch her to 2% for now. She already drinks skim when we run out of her whole milk, and she couldn't care less.

  • We switched DD from whole to 2% at 2yrs (that's what her pedi recommended).

  • As soon as she turned 2.  The fat is important for brain development in the first two years.  My dr said it's best to gradually go from 2% to 1% and then even to skim.

  • Dd did not get cows milk til 18 mos and pedi was fine with 2% at that time.
  • My pedi says 2 and we actually switched to skim milk with older DD and will do the same with younger DD>  The only time I have heard of people switching early is if the child is overweight.

  • We had our two-year yesterday, and the pedi said it would be OK to introduce 2% at this age. The milk fats are good for them, and DD is petite and not overweight so we're going to stick with 2% for her for the next year for sure.
  • DD is in the 90th percentile. So we switched her to 2% at 15 months.
