NPR:Help, who would I contact about an order that was placed in my name?

I just got a call from a tool company saying they couldn't place my order because they couldn't verify my card. Well, I have never placed an order with this company and it was to be shipped to someone else. The lady had my address and the last 4 of the credit card don't match anything I have. Who should I contact about this?

  • EEEK!  I'd probably start by calling the 3 credit bureaus.

    Experian, TransUnion and Equifax.

  • I just did the credit check and nothing came up with it on it.
  • I'd call the credit card company first.

I'd probably call the police, too, so that something can be on file.

  • First I'd call the  credit card company. Then I'd call the company that took the order.

  • I did call the company and told them I never placed the order. The last 4 of the CC don't match up with any of mine.
  • Since the numbers don't match up, it would more worry me that she had your name and apparently your phone number as well, if the company was able to track you down.  That is why I recommended the credit bureaus, because who knows what else she has.  You can put an alert on your accounts through them to help monitor everything.
