We've had three blowouts to date, all of which happened in the carseat. *sigh* We did take out the NB insert, the strap covers, and the car seat cover and washed them every time. Be sure to use the gentle cycle and air dry them, as per the instructions. They come clean easily this way.
The instructions say to remove the NB insert at 11 lbs, which we just did this past weekend.

We wash ours all the time on the gentle cycle and then hang to dry. I'll usually wash it at night so it has plenty of time to dry before the morning.
I believe the insert should be taken out around 11 pounds.
exactly this. we took our bottom pad out and he weighs 12 pounds.

No, just the butt one. I only recently took out the head one.
Nope, just the bottom part.
We took out both, because that was my understanding. DD did fine with no head insert, btw. I'll have to re-read the directions. . .
we took the headrest out when we took out the newborn insert, although i don't think we really needed to.
we have a different head support that we use anyway.
