2nd Trimester

So if you do have GD, then what?

What do you have to do if you find out you have gestational diabetes? I've been reading up on this because my test is in 3 weeks, and I wanted to know more about causes and what happens during and after pregnancy. Most of the books have been really generic with it though, saying if you do have it, your Dr. will set up a food plan and your baby may be born larger but not more mature.

So I'm curious as to how it really affects pregnancy, food, baby, activity, and if it can lead to other problems. Does it just go away after you give birth?

Re: So if you do have GD, then what?

  • I have a friend who has it right now. She has to eat every two hours, check her blood, and stay away from certain foods (I can't remember which ones though, but there were quite a few she has to stay away from). It will typically go away after birth, but in my friend's case, they actually think it might not. She is due at the end of September. I'll let you know how it goes. Good luck!

  • I also wanted to add that maybe you can post this question on the 3rd Tri board and you may get more specific answers as more of them have done the test and may or may no have GD.
  • You'll get a diet, test your blood sugar, and have more monitoring of the baby through u/s, non-stress tests, etc.

It usually goes away after birth. They'll retest you at your 6 week pp check.  You *may* develop type 2 diabetes later in life so my doc also checks me yearly now.

You'll have the GD test earlier in any future pregnancies.
