Karo Syrup for Constipation

My pedi recommends karo syrup in one ounce of water for constipation, but MayoClinic.com says it isn't recommended and that it could potentially cause infant botulism. Thoughts? What has your pedi prescribed for your LO's constipation?

  • Wow... in this case I would def trust the internet over your pedi. Mayo Clinic is pretty trustworthy, and I wouldn't want to take the risk. Perhaps there is something that they do recommend?? Sorry I don't have any remedies.

I know, right? Seems kind of scary. It says for infants older than 2 months, give them 2 to 4 ounces of water twice a day in addition to their usual fluid intake. He's not quite 2 months though! For his age, it says to ask your pedi...Huh?

  • Wow. I'm glad I saw this. We've been giving Lizzi Karo in at least one bottle a day because she had issues pushing poop out. Still, sugar water seems to work better any way. We put one-half oz of sugar to eight ounces water and give her no more than an ounce or two between feedings. Cleared things up easier than the Karo anyway.

  • 1oz pear or prune juice to 1oz of water once daily between feedings until regular (about a week).
  • I have used karo syrup many times....It worked at first but then i think DD got used to it.  My dd has been constipated for like a month but Pedi isn't concerned as long as she is gaining weight and eating.  Use Dark Karo Syrup it has more sugar in it so your LO gets more water in their system.  I have used Karo syrup when dd was about 3 weeks old but i did it with one ounce of formula.  I wouldn't do water...water is just not that great for baby.  I have done prune juice which worked great too. One ounce of purne juice straight and thats it.  I had to go back to karo syrup just about a month ago i did it for a week. And she was still constipated thats why i think her stomach is used to the karo syrup now.  Good luck and listen to your Pedi not websites!

  • We were recommended water and prune juice and neither worked.  I called the pedi the next day to tell them no success.  They recommended inserting a rectal thermometer.  Sometimes it just needs to be stimulated.  It worked wonderfully!!   It was in for less than 10 sec.
