Lazy Latcher

My DS will pull slightly away in the middle of feeding so that he only has the nipple in his mouth and then clamp down on the nipple. I've heard that repeatedly unlatching your little one can cause gas - am I suppose to just let him mutilate my nipple? Anyone else have this problem or any tips to keep him latched on properly?

Re: Lazy Latcher

  • Do NOT let him mutilate your nipple. If he does something that hurts, let him know it hurt you by saying "ouch" loudly. Then use your pinky to unlatch him and then help him get back on properly. Do it over and over. Babies are smarter then we give them credit for...once he learns he can't get away with it, he'll stop trying. If you still can't get it right, call an LC.

  • Try to follow PPer or a LCs advice and fix this now. I used a nipple shield because it was easier and it took until 8 weeks to get her broken from that habit. Now I am still struggling with latch problems that are similar to what you described at 10 weeks. I can't get my LO to open her mouth wide enough. I get blanching from the bad latch and it kills, not just the nipple but lovely shooting pains through my whole breast. Good luck!
