NPR: Anyone else live by train tracks?

I originally thought I could be ok with it and every says you eventually don't hear them. The fourth or fifth one in the past hour and a half is going by. They run as late as midnight and as early as 5 a.m. Please tell me it gets better? In the future it will def. be a deal-breaker.

Re: NPR: Anyone else live by train tracks?

  • I have lived by train tracks pretty much all my life!  I always just seem to be near them for some reason.  Our last place was the closest to them- probably 200 yards.  You DO get used to it.  At least I did!  GL!

  • We're so close you can see it going by through the trees. Luckily we have a fence so I don't have to worry about A. Some people I know say they got so used to it they find it hard to sleep w/out the sound.

    Thanks!

  • Make that # 6. They're busy today.

  • We do, but we actually really enjoy the sounds of the trains. We're right in the middle of the city so the trains are at slower speeds and dont often use their whistles, but we can definitely hear them (we're less than 300 feet from the tracks but they're down a hill). For us, it was just part of the city living we desired. I know it's not helping right now, but I think "they" are right when they say that you will eventually stop noticing- at least as much.
  • I grew up with trains and they did grow on us. When DH and I were dating, he would always comment on the trains and I never heard them.

Now, I live off one of the busiest streets in the city and all I hear is sirens all day and night.

  • We used to live directly on the street the T runs on here (in certain areas it is above ground). So, we had two lanes of busy traffice, the train, then two more lanes of busy traffic going the other way. We completely tuned it out after a while - you definitely get used to it. If it is bothering you at night/when sleeping try some white noise. Another old apartment of ours was right behind a post office (where they loaded all the trucks at the crack of dawn) - the white noise drowned everything out and saved our sleep.

  • I grew up and my family is still by the train tracks. I seriously never heard them. You learn to live with them. Funny story....when I was about 8 years old I had a friend sleep over. Our windows would actually shake because we were soo close and she woke up crying and I was oblivious to what she was crying about. You will get used to them!
