Help!

Good Morning:  I am lost....maybe someone can help?  I am 19 weeks pregnant and have come down with what I think is a cold.  Not sure though.  My ears are clogged, I can't breathe through my nose and my throat hurts so bad.  Feels like there is an egg in it.  I had a bad night last night.  Up and down blowing my nose (which nothing is coming out) and gargling with salt water for my throat.  I called my OBYN's answering service this morning and this nasty doctor called back.  He didn't want to be bothered with me at all.  Basically I wanted to know what over the counter meds I could take.  He said Sudafed and Robitussen.  He hung up before I could ask him what kind of Robitussen to take....there is a few different kinds.  Has anyone else been sick recently and taken sudafed or robitussen and if so, what kinds?  Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Help!

  • I don't know about the Robitussin but I would stick to plain Sudafed. That's what my list of OK meds says.

  • I had a cold last week, pretty much just toughed it out.  I took sudafed (the kind you dont have to get from behind the counter) and it didn't touch my symptoms!  I am a big fan of afrin nasal spray, taken only at night before bed for 2-3 days, otherwise you could get addicted, but it works wonders! and my doctor said it was ok to use in pregnancy.  It your cold lasts too long or you develop a fever-go see a doctor!  I reluctantly went for a low grade fever last week and found out I have mono, so you can never be to careful.  hope you feel better soon.

  • My doc said I could take Robitussin and Sudafed. I'm currently taking both, but tomorrow, day 4, will be my last day regardless of whether I'm better.

  • Both meds should be the straight up kind. Meaning, you want the stuff that says just Robitussin or just Sudafed. You can take something that has a cough suppresent, but not an expectorant. Ask the pharmacist, they should be able to help you.

  • As the pharmacist.  They know a lot about what is safe to take and what is not.  But always take your doctor's advice over theirs.
