Mini Crib?

Anyone considering purchasing a mini crib rather than a full size one?

I've thought about one...our rooms are super small, and we don't have much space. We're making our own bedding, so that wouldn't be an issue.  One that I've found even folds out into a toddler bed.

I've heard really varying things about mini cribs--from "You shouldn't buy them because kids grow out of them too fast" to "My baby loved his more than the standard size crib."

Re: Mini Crib?

  • I haven't thought about it yet, but it's a good idea.  Our nursery is super small, too... where do you find mini cribs?

  • Wal-Mart, Target....pretty much everywhere I've looked carries them. We just don't have anywhere nearby that I could go to actually see one set up.
  • I was at Buy Buy Baby today in Manhattan and they had two set up one was made by Riley and the other was made by Haley (?).  Anyways, surprisingly both were much nicer, sturdier, better quality than I had anticipated.  They were quite substantial actually meaning I think the baby could be in it for awhile.

At this point, a mini crib would be my top choice.  We have also looked at co-sleepers, bassinets, and even the Stokke.

I love that you are making your bedding.  Would love to see what you come up with!

  • We are going to be buying a mini crib, we are having the baby in our room (we have  a small apartment). I saw a regular size crib today and it was huge! Why does a small baby need a mattress that I could sleep on? I definitely think that a mini crib will do just fine.

  • My BRU has one set up, it looks really nice, just a min version of the big one.  Does it come with the mattress?  I don;t remember how much it was but I do remember thinking that it wasn't a great deal.
  • Hi ladies,

I love the Bump! I was just about to post about this very thing. My DH and I just bought a one-bed apartment (700 sq. ft. is all we can afford for a starter in the NYC area) and so the baby will be bunking with us.

I've been reading Baby Bargains and it doesn't have much to report about mini-cribs, but Walmart carries a really cute one by Baby Mod, which is Million Dollar Baby. Babies R Us has a DaVinci one, also Million Dollar Baby, which I think is pretty much the same model. Baby Bargains grades Million Dollar Baby as a B-.

But I will definitely check out the models Buy, Buy, Baby has in person and report back.

Anybody see any other options? I've also been looking at mattress and bedding options, but read those are a lot more scarce for minis.

    Thanks!

  • I'm definitely getting a mini crib.  So far I think i want the DaVinci Alpha mini crib, it has wheels on it (which I need) because we are planning on having the baby in our room while we have overnight guests, and in the den when we are alone.

I've also seen the fold-up ones, but I think this one looks more sturdy.  I will also check out buybuybaby but the Stokke one is way too pricey.

Can someone give me some insight on how to get bedding made?  I would love to do that!

  • By the way, there are TONS of portable crib bedding options at www.babybedding.com
  • I considered it, but we laid DS in one and he was just as long as it, and he could've climbed right out (the sides aren't tall enough at all IMO).
