hamburger latch?

Do you do the "hamburger latch" where you squeeze your nipple and areola like a hamburger for the baby to latch onto, or do you just try to get as wide of a gape as possible and shove as much of the areola in as you can?

I am having latch issues and can't get LO's lip to come up over the nipple when we do the hamburger thing.  My nipple gets stuck under his lip or right behind his lip and huuuuurts.  :(

Re: hamburger latch?

  • Do the hamburger latch as you described, but aim for the nipple to go in at a little bit lower of an angle, if that makes sense.  So, aim for behind his lip, but compress the areola so he gets as much of it in his mouth as possible, too.  I haven't had 100% success with the nursing books' advice to "aim my nipple toward the nose."  My adjustment seems to correct the problem.

  • I had issues with that hold too. Try the "k" hold. Make a peace sign, and turn it sideways across your nipple, with the nipple between your fingers. This allows you to compress the nipple for baby to latch, but also pull the skin back a little at the same time. Hope it works for you.
