Ugh. DS has been sick all week. Stomach bug, fever, rash, sleeping like crap, not eating etc. This has been going on since last Sunday. Saw the pedi twice. It's viral, wait it out, blah, blah, blah. Today DS woke up at 4am absolutely inconsolable for close to two hours. He could not tell us what was wrong or if anything hurt. Finally calmed down and was acting okay for a while. Took a really early nap since he had been up so early. Same thing happened when he woke up from his nap. Crying, screaming, sobbing for what seemed like an eternity. Called pedi, they told us to take him to the ER.
The conclusion. Coxsackie virus (hand, foot and mouth). Apparently a very severe strain of the virus that cause inflamations of the glands in both head/neck and belly causing severe belly pain and/or headache.
Fucking_HFM is causing my baby to be more miserable than I've ever seen him. Writhing in pain. I had no idea this could happen. He's had coxsacking before and it was nothing like this. Scariest thing ever. He's sleeping now. Let's hope this is a better night than the last six. If I knew what was good for me I'd be heading to bed now too.
Re: Spent the afternoon in the ER
Poor baby and mommy. I hope he feels better soon! I hate when they are sick.
I didnt realize you can get the virus twice.
I'm sorry. Poor little guy
My DS had this and he too was MISERABLE. Hope he feels better soon.
We had been alternating tylenol and motrin earlier in the week when his fever was highest but, he hadn't had any since about 4pm yesterday. When he woke up during the night, he didn't have a fever so I didn't give him anymore. The pedi in the ER suggested keeping up with Tylenol for the pain even if he doesn't have a fever. (he actually said he does not like to use Motrin for kids under 4 which I thought was interesting and does not agree with what our regular pedi has recommended.)
And, for the poster who said they didn't think you could get it twice. I learned today that there are dozens of strains for the coxsackie virus, and you can get them all. This is the third time DS has had it and by far the worst (which is why it never occured to us that that is what it was.)
