Breastfeeding

Mirena + Breastfeeding

I got the mirena inserted last week and now I'm freaking out about hormones passing to LO through my breastmilk. I guess my doctor isn't too familiar with it because when I asked her about mirena she said it didn't have hormones. I didn't become aware of this until after I got it inserted. I'm kind of annoyed. Do the hormones pass into breastmilk? Wouldn't that be a bad thing?

Re: Mirena + Breastfeeding

  • You have lots of hormones naturally occurring in your body.  The hormone in Mirena is a synthetic form of progesterone.  Mirena does not affect your milk/ability to breastfeed.

     Yes this.

I had a Mirena inserted when DS was about 6 weeks, and breastfed until he was 20 months.  Milk supply was totally unaffected, and my doctor assured me that the hormones from the IUD would not affect breast milk.  It's a very low-level of hormones, intended to be delivered pretty directly to the area they're supposed to affect - that's one of the reasons I chose the IUD over the pill.

  • My MW said that the amount of hormones in Mirena are the equivalent to 1-2 birth control pills for the entire month.  Thats practically nothing.

  • My ob told me that the amount of hormones in mirena is so low, that you could actually take bcp with it.  I've had mine since june and have had no problems.
