Were you induced? I have some questions...

I'm scheduled to be induced on Monday.  I'm already 2cm and 100% effaced, so what's the probability of the induction failing?  I should be okay, right?  I figure if I'm already dilating, that's a good sign.  I went into labor naturally with DS and had a completely normal vaginal birth.  I am nervous and don't want to have a c-section....

Re: Were you induced? I have some questions...

  • I was induced with DD and everything went fine.  I was already starting to dilate and quickly got to 10 cm with the pitocin.  I did end up with a c/s but that was because DD was breech.

  • I was 3 cm and 80% effaced at my induction.  I had my son less than 7 hours after they started pitocin!  I doubt that your induction will fail (I'm so NOT a doctor, so take it for what it's worth) unless there's something else going on.  Why are you being induced?

  • I was 1 cm (after the doc stripped my membranes) and I think 50% effaced when I was induced. No problems with mine.

I quickly got 10 cm and 100%, but it ended in a C-section because after 20 hrs of labor, DD had not progressed at all and was going into distress. We discovered after the C-section that she was face-up and had a bruise on the top of her head from the pushing!

  • I was 1cm when I went in to start my induction.  They placed Cervadil at 10 pm and removed it at 6 am.  I was at 2cm.  Started pitocin at 6:45 am.  OB checked me at 7:30 am and I was 3cm.  She brok my water then.  By 9:40 I was 4-5 cm.  My epi was in by 10:30 am.  OB checked me at noon and I was 8cm.  12:55 I felt pressure and they checked me.  I was complete.  Gave a couple of practice pushes and then started the real pushing at 1pm.  He was born at 1:30 pm.  From the start of pitocin until he was born was 6 hours and 45 minutes.

I'm thinking if you are already dilating and you're fully effaced, you should respond favorably to the induction.

Good luck!  I can't wait to see pics!

  • I was induced with both kids and both L&D experiences were excellent! I was a little further along with DS and seemed to go faster with him. My induction with DD took a little over 12 hours from start to finish and I was only 1-2 with her when we got started. Good luck - I'm sure you'll be fine!

  • I was technically induced because my water broke & 8 hrs later I never had any contractions that were of much significance.  Before my water broke, I was 80+% effaced and 2cm dilated.  After being given the pitocin, I was pushing less than 90 min. later.  Didn't get my epi, however, I had a super fast birth & felt awesome afterwards.  I would say it's a very good sign that you're already effaced/dilated.
  • I was induced with my 1st.  I had a doc appt on the Friday before my Tuesday induction and I specifically asked what the probability was for me to have a failed induction.  She checked me and found that I was about 85% effaced.  She told me I was good to go with little chance for a failed induction.  She went on to tell me that a successful induction depends 100% on how effaced you are.  Since I was more than 50% effaced, she had no worries.  I'd say with you being at 100% that you'll be just fine.

Bear in mind that I was being induced 2 days before my due date for medical reasons.  It was another doc in the practice that wanted me to schedule the induction.  When I went in to see her and she saw that I was going in on Tuesday she was VERY skeptical and thought it was crazy that I was being induced 2 days before my due date as a first time mom.  After she checked me, she completely changed her tune and was 100% for it.

In the end, I had a successful induction although I did end up with a c-section after 30 minutes of pushing and DD was stuck.  My c-section had NOTHING to do with being induced!

  • induced x2, no section... I will tell you my stories... but note, every delivery is different.  my advice, walk while you can... sit up while you can... reposition while you can... let gravity help.  good luck!!!

with dd (#1) , I was 0cm and "thinning" at the start (for preeclampsia, I was 36wk 5d).  we started with cervadil at 6:30am on Friday... then proceded to pitocin... at 5pm on Sat I was finally 1cm.  the ob wanted to break my water but recommended an epi first after I nearly broke her finger during that internal.... I literally almost jumped out of the bed.  I had to wait until the ob on call was out of the OR (7pm) .. he started the epi, at a little after 8p the ob broke my water and mag sulfate was started.  I fell asleep... sooooo nice....  I woke at 11 with a strip of pain to my left side and pressure down... I was 9cm... my ob was called... I started pushing... at 1am Sunday morning her heart rate dropped and was staying at or below 60... the OR was called in for a stat section... I said HELL NO... I pushed her out 1:08am... and then about 5 or 6 people worked on her while my ob and nurse cared for me... I know she was bagged b/c my husband watched... but know little else b/c I don't remember it.  My first real moment with dd happened on Monday morning when they were weaning the mag.  But I do have pics of me with her prior.

with ds (#2).... again induced for preeclampsia but very mild case and I was 38wk 2d... 3cm outer, 2 cm internal os, at about 40%effaced at the start... pit was started at 8am... by 5pm I was a full 4cm and 70%effaced.  the midwife stripped my membranes... my ob came in to break my water.. she did so a little after 6:30pm... within 5min I was 5cm.. 5 min later I was shaking uncontrollably.. anesthesia came in, started my epi...  I laid down , he's pushing the med into the epi cath, nurse checks me and I'm 9cm.  (w/n an hour).  I had to try to lay back and wait for my Ob to return ... when she did,  I pushed him out in 3 contractions.. 8:10pm.  much easier.

  • I was induced with both children.  I would say in your case, the induction should go really smoothly, especially since you've delivered vaginally before.  I was 2cm but only about 40% effaced with Logan when I was induced and had him within hours of the medicine working.  Of course everyone is different, but it sounds to me like the chances of everything going the way you want it to are good.

Good luck and enjoy your new baby on Monday - however he/she arrives!

  • With DD3, I was 1.5cm, 50% effaced and she was way up in my ribs (+2 or -2....whatever, 2...up high).

I was convinced I was setting myself up for failure, but my BP was bad and the NST was bad, so I had no choice.

It took almost 21hrs (my last delivery was only 4.5hrs).

I got 2 doses of oral Cytotec.  I chose that so I could keep moving.  If you do vaginal stuff, you have to lay down for a few hours and I didn't want that.  I effaced to 100% and dilated to about 3cm, but she was still way up.  They started the Pitocin.  I got to 5cm - still too high to break my water.

I wanted to cry.  I was getting really depressed and upset over it.  But, I kept walking and hoping she'd finally come down.  They cranked that Pitocin up to 20 - the highest level.

Finally, she came down, they broke my water and 2.5hrs later, she flew out.

It wasn't pleasant, but it worked out fine and I didn't get an epidural and didn't need a c-section or any other kind of intervention.

    Good luck!

  • Both of the labor with my inductions were great.   The delivery with DD not so much, forceps, huge tear, long recovery.  DS's delivery was smooth (with the exception of the epi only taking on one side) and a breeze recovery!
