Climbing out of the crib....

How did you handle it?  DD (28 mo) has climbed out of her crib the last two nights in the middle of the night (5am and 3am!)  We're installing the toddler bed rail today because I'm afraid she'll hurt herself.  So that means she can now get up and out herself.  Her room is upstairs, ours is downstairs.  If we put up a gate, I'm concerned that she'll climb that too.  DH is uncomfortable with locking her in her room.   I'm worried about her falling down the stairs (although she never has)

Do we give her free rein to get up, out and down the stairs?  Or find another way to lock her in/up?

Re: Climbing out of the crib....

  • Does she usually go downstairs when she does get out?

  • DS has free range, but we have a ranch style home, so no stairs except to go down to the basement. Is there anything else upstairs you'd be concerned about her getting into? If not, I'd say, put a gate at the top of the stairs. GL
  • Wednesday night she came all the way downstairs and knocked on our bedroom door.  (She knocked so loud, DH thought it was my FIL (who was visiting) and then opened the door and didnt' see anyone---then looked down, surprise!)
Last night I got to her as she was leaving her room about to head downstairs.

Honestly, I think she's sleepwalking, she just hugs me and goes to sleep.  Can't answer questions, totally out of it.

I'm not quite afraid of her getting into anything, but I'm worried that if she tries to climb a gate at the top of the stairs, that would be even more dangerous than just going down unobstructed stairs.

  • I'd put the toddler door knob cover on the inside of the door.  Baby proof the room and use the monitor.  If you have a PNP still, I'd put that up in the room and let her know that if she gets out of bed she's going back in the PNP.
  • I would not be comfortable with locking her door. Do you still have the monitor? Can you start talking to her about how she can fall since she's half asleep and she can simply call you. Or put a gate by her door instead of the stairs (I wouldn't feel comfortable with this either to be honest)

My DD gets up everyday and walks straight to my room, half asleep, every single night.
