Would you let your preschooler have this?

Ds's favorite treat lately, something that he calls milk coffee:

A small splash of coffee (less than an ounce) and a small spoon of sugar mixed together with a mug of cold milk.

He loves it (he's always done everything in his power to steal my coffee even when he was a toddler) and I figure that it can't have any more caffeine than chocolate milk and probably less sugar.

Would you let your preschooler drink this or is coffee strictly for adults only in your household?

  • We let DD have this. However, we have learned that she prefers just milk and coffee with no sugar.

  • I don't drink coffee, but when DH does he tells DS its a "daddy only drink." DS doesn't really care and moves on about his day. :)

If he really wanted to have some, the amount your giving sounds fine. :) (IMO)

  • A splash isn't going to hurt him. One time I went to rock Maile to sleep and came back to discover Bella had drank my whole iced triple grande white mocha. And to be honest, she really didn't act that crazy from it.
  • yes.  But I know my DD wouldn't like it.  She begged for DH's coffee so much that he finally let her have a sip of a coffee drink one day (it was a frozen latte thing, so it was really sweet) and she hated it.

  • Coffee won't be allowed until 12 or 13 in my house. Mostly because it's a habit I don't want to get into My dd is 3 and loves tea though- decaf tea with lots of warm milk.
  • Yes, but she doesn't like it.
  • probably, if he liked it... but he does not. He was trying to taste my coffee when he was little and I let him and he did not like it, lucky me!

I do give my boys some tea in the winter though, especially if they're sick. Tea & honey, what can be better?

  • DS went through a phase where he thought coffee was cool b/c I drink it.  I indulged him with some decaf, sugar and soy milk.  He stopped drinking it shortly thereafter.  LOL!
  • I was always given that as a child and it didn't appear to harm me! I don't even really drink coffee now, so it didn't set me up for a lifelong caffeine addiction, either.

  • I think it's fine. It's likely only got the same amount of caffeine as some chocolate. And its not like he's drinking it all the time, right? No biggie. My kids both love the taste of coffee so once in a while we'll give them a sip or a splash in a cup of milk. But my DD is REALLY big into drinking tea. I make it for her a lot (decaf).
  • I should do this...DS is always trying to swipe my ice coffee and I don't like to share!

  • we do this with ds sometimes. He's always trying to steal mine. I have never added sugar though. Just a splash of coffee.
  • No I would not because I like the boundary of certain things being for adults and certain things being for children in our house. The coffee itself is somewhat inconsequential..it's more the point.
