Clomid and twins?

found out I have low progesterone and dr. wants me to start Clomid..would I have a higher chance of multiples if twins run in my family and dh is a twin as well? I am worried about releasing 2 eggs and then having the possibility of one of them splitting, resulting in 3..am I nuts?  or over thinking this?

Re: Clomid and twins?

  • Clomid does increase the chance of twins pretty significantly, but it's very rare to conceive higher order multiples.  Identical twins (egg splitting) is just random - not something genetic.  Are the twins in your family fraternal or identical?  The tendency to release multiple eggs does have some genetic basis, passed through the mother's side, I believe.

  • When I discussed it with my Dr prior to taking Clomid, she told me the risk of multiples was not any higher with taking Clomid.  They did not monitor me with ultrasound or anything when I took it (that was about 3.5 yrs ago, not sure if the monitoring is a more recent thing, but seems common now).  Anyway, the did to a blood test to make sure I ovulated.  I can't remember exactly what it was that they were testing in the blood, but they had told me a good number would be 10-15.  When mine came back at 63, I freaked out and asked the nurse if that meant that I had more than 1 since a normal was supposed to be about 5-6 times lower.  The nurse LAUGHED and said "oh honey, the risk of multiples is ALWAYS higher when you take Clomid".  Um, nice.  It turned out that I had 2, but one ended up to be a "disappearing twin".  Apparently, that is very common too (in general, not just on Clomid), and the only reason I knew was I had several very early ultrasounds due to bleeding.

    they are identical

Identical twins do not run in families (that is like a fluke). Fraternal are passed on by the mother's side so if they are on your dh's side than you are in the clear. My OB told me that clomid does increase your chances of multiples but only by like 5% if I remember correctly. GL to you!

  • The PP is correct. Fraternal twins sometimes run on the mother's side because the woman releases more than one egg when she ovulates.  I've not seen anything that indicated having identical twins is heritable.

I started Clomid this cycle and my doctor told me that the chance of twins only increases a few percentage points.  He told me is isn't significant.  I've seen LOTS of contradictory info about that, though.

  • It's a 5% increase in the chance for fraternal twins.  NOT a significant increase like  PP said.

Identical twins are, for lack of a better term, a freak of nature.  LOL

You take my ovaries, I take your yarns.
  • My SIL got pg with TRIPLETS (who were born at 28wks) her second round of Clomid.  They now have three 2 year old sons- AAHH!
  • the risk is about 10% higher.  If you have FRATERNAL twins in your family you have a higher chance.... but if they are identical- it has no effect.  Your DH having twins in his family means nothing to your chances - it's all about your ovaries- not his sperm.

make sure you are monitored via US... you don't want 6 babies - which can happen if you are not monitored.
