Anyone have lacing cards?

We're driving 900 miles (each way ... uggggh) to see MIL and I'm trying to get ready for the car ride.

Does anyone's 2 yo have lacing cards? I'm thinking these might be a good activity, I just don't want them to be too frustrating (and I get soooo carsick, I really don't want to ride in the back with her!).

TIA

Re: Anyone have lacing cards?

  • I got them for DS on our last plane ride. He loved them, but didn't use them in the appropriate way. He was into wrapping the strings around him, playing with the cards  - we had a farm animal set -, etc. Whatever, it kept him busy!

  • 1800 miles?  That's a long ride indeed.  We've never done lacing cards, but the 3 things we just used on  recent flights were these:

One of these sticker things: (the Sweet Shoppe)

And this magnetic dress the doll thing:   (I hate all that princess stuff, but hey - it kept her busy.  We got the Snow White one.)

Both of them were *wildly* successful and very  time consuming.

That second website has a few other ideas, too.

Neither of them were cheap, but they were worth it.  You could make lacing cards yourself so easily, those would be free, at least...  wouldn't hurt to take some.

The other thing we got her was this ultra tacky princess cell phone.  She *adores* it.  And it was cheap.

We had them all wrapped up with lots of wrapping paper, tape, and ribbons.  Took her a while to just get into them.  Then she was absorbed.

GL finding stuff to do for her back there!

  • L loves lacing cards.  She is actually really good at them and feels for the holes rather than turning it over.  I just got her new ones for at the hospital when the baby is born.  The new ones are from TRU and they are Melissa and Doug brand.  They are shaped like animals and made out of wood.

  • What a great idea to wrap the toys!!!!!!! Excellent! To make lacing cards, I use cardstock and double laminate. You already have the strings since Dana strings beads. Contac paper would do as a laminate.
  • Thanks! Looks like I'll be getting some tomorrow! I might make some out of foam, too, since we're also flying cross-country in a few weeks, too (not sure if I want to lug wooden toys through the airports!).

And Morocco, funny you should mention but I just stocked up on some extra stickers and a magnetic toy set (I found one with dogs and cats, her fave). And I thoroughly plan on wrapping everything, too! Thanks for all the great ideas!

  • Yes, we have the Melissa & Doug Animal lacing cards and DS really likes them.

He also really likes to string cheerios onto pipe cleaners - that actually keeps him busy longer than the lacing cards!  That would be easy and cheap for a car activity too - plus its a snack and activity in one - how's that for multitasking!!

  • The nice thing about those 'sticker' kits I posted is that they're reusable.  They cling -- they don't really stick.  She still wants to haul them out a several times a week.

The cat/dog magnet thing sounds great!  Not a frou frou princess in sight.  ;)

  • We have them but on our last plane ride, they didn't keep either of my kids (1 1/2 and 3) busy for very long.
