DH hates common names, especially for girls. (for some reason, he's okay with more common names for boys.) I have loved the name Sarah since I was a kid and would name all of my dolls Sarah. DH thinks it is boring.
It was in the top ten on the social security lists in the 80s and 90s but since 2002 it has been dropping each year and was 20 in 2008. It is a little more common than ideal and more popular than most of the names I like, but I just love the name.
what do you think? do you think it will keep dropping in popularity? will it seem like an "old lady" name, since so many people in my generation have it?
Re: Is Sarah boring?
I hope not since that's my name If you put a longer middle name with it I think it sounds pretty (mine is Elizabeth).

Sarah may not be "exciting," but it's a pretty, classic name that will never go out of style.
However, if your DH really doesn't like it, I'd probably come up with some names that you both like.
I personally like it even though I wouldn't probably use it because it was one of my grandmother's names. Pretty and classic.
I'm a Sara Elizabeth as well. I do not think it is a boring name either, but I know way too many Sara Elizabeths. Maybe Sara with a less common middle name.
ditto, that's my mn too! I also have a SIL that is Sarah Elizabeth. Personally I really like my name and don't feel like it is an old lady name. I think it works great for a baby, little girl, teenager, adult, and elderly.

Sarah is my DD's name so obviously, I don't think it's boring. It's DH's favorite girl name and I really loved it too so it was an easy decision. We get compliments on her name a lot. We told people her name before she was born and we never received a negative comment. Most people think it's a beautiful classic name. Bonus is it's easy to spell and pronounce. I just love this name!
ETA: Her middle name is Catherine after my grandma and Dh's great grandma. ?

Another Sarah Elizabeth here! :-) Obviously I'm biased, but I actually do think it's a timeless, classic name. I don't think it will ever be "old lady".
I knew a couple other Sarah's growing up, but not a ton. So I don't feel it's "too" popular.
I do think a long middle name is good, but I would suggest something other than Elizabeth. While I think they sound good together, I do think it's an insanely popular pairing. Margaret, Madeline are two I come up w/ off the top of my head.

Another Sarah Elizabeth here, and I've known a couple in real life too. It's dropping in popularity, but 20 is still pretty high--so there are lots of other "new" Sarahs out there, so I don't think it will take on an "old lady" sound any time soon. I just saw a baby Sarah at the grocery store today (her mom was talking to her, so I heard her name), and it made me smile (-=

I love the name Sarah, especially with the middle name Jane. I also know a Sara Margaret.
If DH thinks it's boring, what about the NN Sadie to go with it? Then she would always have the classic name Sarah but that could "jazz" it up a bit.
I agree with this as well. I just think some people don't see it as "exciting" because it used to be super super popular and so it's not novel anymore.
wow, I had no idea there were so many Sara(h) Elizabeth's out there! I'm glad to hear so many people think Sarah is a lovely name. I would never want to name my kid a name my DH disliked - I'm just hoping he'll come around on this one.
I wouldn't use Sarah Elizabeth, though, since Elizabeth is my first name and I don't want to use my name. Thanks for everyone's replies!
