I really want to get one $5 or so item for each kid (possibly a boy and a girl item), as opposed to a party bag with candy and stickers and stuff. Any ideas?
We were just at a birthday party that had those "stained glass" things that kids paint. The kids had a great time picking out which one they wanted to paint and painting what they chose. Even my 2 1/2 year old enjoyed it and it served as not only a fun activity (note: do it on an old table outside if you can) but a fun favor to take home. I'm not sure how much they cost but I don't think they were that expensive.
Both children were conceived with assistance after a MFI DX of Azoospermia. DIUI.
One of DD's friends recently had a "Birthday CD" for his 3rd birthday. It was awesome. They compiled his favorite songs and printed a cute insert for the cover. DD LOVES it and it's so much better than getting a baggie of plastic junk.
Similar to what a pp said, for my sons train birthday we gave out wooden train whistles, striped engineer caps and red bandanas. The kids loved dressing up in them.
Re: Ideas for 3rd bday party favors ...
Do you have a party theme?
I think I am doing trick or treat bags.
Thomas the train, but I don't think I want a Thomas favor, but I don't know.

Hats $3.99: https://www.birthdayexpress.com/Childs-Engineer-Hat/26378/PartyItemDetail.aspx
Bandanas $1.33 each: https://www.birthdayexpress.com/Red-Bandana/52096/PartyItemDetail.aspx
Wooden whistle $1.33 (they also have small ones for 99 cents): https://www.birthdayexpress.com/Large-Wooden-Train-Whistle/49577/PartyItemDetail.aspx
The total was a little over $6 per child, but they are really nice items and my kids still use these sevearl years later. You could also check ebay.
