Potty trained but "regressing"?

DS has been completely PT(day for 5 months and night for 3 months) but lately he has pooped in his pants EVERY day for 2 weeks and is waking up wet every morning for 2 weeks. He is still doing great  peeing in the potty though. I don't understand and have no idea how to fix it..,any suggestions would be appreciated. TIA

Oh and nothing has changed in our routine or anything like that.

Re: Potty trained but "regressing"?

  • Perhaps a growth spurt and his brain hasn't caught up with his body growth (i.e. bowels and bladder)?  I know this can happen and does for many kiddos...

  • I think regressions are normal.  Our youngest DD has been PT'd for a few months now, but every once in awhile she'll just have an accident out of the blue.  My bff's DD has been trained for almost a year but is now having some accidents.  I think it can happen with 'stress' in their little lives- which sometimes us grownups wouldn't interpret as stress!

I think being consistent & continuing to praise is what is needed & he'll be back on track soon.  If he has an accident, just be very matter of fact about it "Oops, had an accident- lets try to make it to the potty next time!" clean it up & forget about it.  Don't make a big deal about it.  As for waking up wet, I'd put him back in pull ups or something for night if he's out of them if you don't want to clean up wet sheets.  i'm sure it will resolve soon.
