24 hour urine test

If your doctor ordered this test, when in the pregnancy did you do it?  Is it routine to do it throughout the pg?

My peri asked my OB to have me run one and now I'm wondering why since I'm still pretty early in the pg.  Is this common practice?  I didn't ask yesterday when she gave me the jug.

Re: 24 hour urine test

  • I can't answer her question, but just wanted to say Hi!!!  I try to check over here to see how your doing.  Hope everything is going wonderfully!

  • I had to do one because there was small traces of blood in my urine samples.  Unfortunately, the 24 hour test didn't clear up anything for me and I had to get a kidney u/s.  Thankfully, it didn't end up impacting either the babies' health or mine.  Apparently, there are just some people out there that have nothing really wrong with them, but have small traces of blood in their urine.

Anyway, there are a number of reasons to order the test.  I'd just call your doc's office and find out why it was ordered.

It's so much fun having a giant jug of pee in your refrigerator.  =)

  • I am on hospital bedrest and started these once a week since 28 weeks. They are checking for protein in your urine to see if you are pre-e.

Are you having issues with your blood pressure?

  • I did after i had a pre-eclampsia scare (they found some protein in my urine). I was about 28 weeks.  Was there anything unusual at your last appointment...higher BP, that kind of thing?  I think all OBs are different - maybe yours just does one every trimester or something to be safe.

Hey Kriesberg!  Thanks for checking on me:)  I sometimes post on SAL, but not often.  Hope your doing well!

So far my blood pressure has been just fine. 110-120/60-72  range.  I think I'm going to call just to be sure why its ordered so early.   I was put back on Metformin because my blood sugars were a little elevated.

  • I had to do one early on because I had some high blood pressure (from nerves) in the doctors office. I also had some high liver enzymes so he had me do the 24 hour urine to have a baseline for where my protein levels, etc. were at to compare for later in pregnancy...if that makes sense.

Basically he wanted to check and make sure things were okay and said if nothing else it would give him a comparison if my blood pressure became an issue later.

I ended up having kidney issues so did multiple 24 hour urines during my pregnancy...its a pain!

  • The peri's office just called me back.  She said it is just for a baseline and to check to see if kidneys and everything else is working fine due to my higher glucose numbers.  She said not to worry its just to have something to check against in the future as things progress.
  • My friend is pregnant, not with multiples, and she had to do a 24 hr urine test at about 6 weeks. It came back fine, but we didn't know why they had her do it! If 16 weeks is really early it makes me wonder why they had her do it!
