My son has a red, blotchy rash for the 3rd time in 2 months.

My youngest has had 6 ear infections since March. Some of them needed to be treated with 2 different antibotics. After 3 of these infections, he has broken out in this red, blotchy, rash that covers his body.  It always occurs after the EI has supposedly cleared up. We had an ear check yesterday for his latest EI which took 12 days of 2 different types of antobiotics. The infection is gone, but there is still fluid in the left ear. Today he broke out in the rash. It usually goes away in a few days, but I'm not sure if I should be concerned or not? We have an appoitment with the ear nose and throat specialist in a few weeks, but I was told by the pedi. that they prb. will not reccomend tubes because he has not had enough EIs . . . So frustrating. I hate him constantly being on an antibiotic. Would you bring him in the morning to have the rash looked at? Anyone go through something similar?

He also had a flu shot yesterday. Could this be a reaction?

  • That was ALWAYS the indication that DS had an ear infection.  He had them, chronically, for the first 14 months of his life, until he got tubes...

I am assuming that they never actually cleared up, and that was a resulting infection of the EI.  It was diagnosed as ezcema, which we treated by bathing him in cetaphil, which helped.

Tubes solved the problem.  The Ezcema never came back.

  • We just found out my DD is allergic to amoxicillin.  She's been on it before, and her last ear infection was last week.  Last night was her last dose of the amoxicillin, and today she ended up with a splotchy (more circles than just splotches) red rash.  She's a little puffy in the face, and fingers/toes where the rash is.  I don't know if benedryl would help your little one, but you might want to ask the dr. if it could be a reaction to the meds.  I know nothing else about this kind of thing, but thought I'd share my VERY RECENT (as in today) experience with something somewhat similar...

    Good luck!

Funny, I think the rash is also an indication of the EI, but the pedi. told me his ears were clear yesterday. . . I don't know whether to bring him in or not. I think a minor procedure such as the tubes would be better than constant antibiotics, but the pediatrician is pretty confident that the ENT will NOT reccomend them :( I'm expecting a long winter!

Pro-surgery is SO far from what I am all about in general, but it just made sense for us.  I'd make the ENT appt., independent of what your pedi said, just because there are SUCH differing opinions on this.

The surgery was stressful, but a breeze, in hind-sight, and he's had antibiotics ONCE in the 2 years since then.  After NINE times of them in a 9 month period.

I'd see the specialist.  We would not have waited for 9 infections (our doc was a follower of the  5 in a one-year period of time philosophy), but we moved across the country, and had to get acquainted with a new pediatrician.

This is one of those things you just have to do what your mom-gut is telling you to do.

  • My DD had the rash on the last day of amoxicillin also. Her pedi says she is now allergic to it.

Could he be allergic to the meds?

I guess he could be. I've actually asked about this before, but he brushed me off saying it was the after effects of a virus. The last antibiotic he was on was Augmentim(?) Is that penicillin based?

  • It sounds like an allergic reaction to the antibiotics to me. Augmentin is not a PCN.
