Would you buy powdered formula if the can was dented?

I hate my Walmart.  I buy the Parent's Choice brand of formula... the gentle stuff.  Its $8 cheaper than Enfamil.  My Walmart has 5 cans of it and ALL are dented.  They have had these same 5 cans for at least a month and no one is buying them because they are dented.  I took them to customer service a couple of days ago and explained to them issue with them.  They customer service hags looked at me like I was psycho for being paranoid about a dented can.  Today they have been restocked on the shelf.  Am I crazy? Would you buy it if the can was dented?

  • 1. I would call and talk to management not their CS department and tell them the next time you see the same five dented cans on the shelf you are calling corporate. IME stores are not to keep dented cans on the shelf. The contents may be perfectly safe but stores do not want to be the responsible party for telling someone that a dented can is safe.

    2. I don't use powdered formula but RTF. I open every case when we buy them from BRU and check each can. If the can is dented I sub it out for a singleton on the shelf or get a new box. Every can I find dented goes to their CS. I've never seen them restock them.

I don't know how a dented can impacts powdered formula but with RTF I won't use it - it isn't worth the chance for me and it isn't like BRU is giving me a discount for taking that chance.

Here is a good article though that talks about dented cans. It sounds like the powdered dented can might be okay in theory:  https://www.associatedcontent.com/article/1175422/how_to_tell_if_a_dented_can_is_safe.html

  • I've never really thought about it, but this is what google came up with:

When a can is dented, the inside tin layer might be cracked, which allows the liquid to come in contact with the steel, potentially causing rust and even a hole that could allow the contents to spoil.

  • I bought a dented can by mistake..as long as the expiration date is good.. I would buy it.

  • I thought the issue with dented cans was related to botulism, which I don't think can live in a powder.  I could be wrong, though, I didn't read the helpful links posted above.
  • I actually bought formula at Costco last week, got them home and noticed the top of both cans were dented at the seal.  I took them back, that seal could have been broken and for god knows how long and formula is only good for a month.  They exchanged them no questions asked and did not think I was crazy either.

  • A dent? I'm sorry but yeah I don't see what the big deal is.  It probably just got smacked around during delivery.  If there was some sort of issue with the foil seal being broken then yes taht is a problem.

  • I worked at the service desk at Target for 3 years.  Every friday they check all of the baby formula/food and pull it off of the shelf.  It is then either returned to the distributor or to a shelter for them to dertermine if it is ok.  Personally, I wouldn't buy it or anything in a dented can.  I'm a worrier, what can I say!
