Hawaii Babies

First birthday question

*crosses fingers* I hope this is a nice board Wink

I'm planning on a big first birthday party, and I've gotten few comments about this being a Hawiian tradition, and a few people asking me if I'm from Hawaii. So I was wondering if you ladies could ellaborate for me...what's up with the Hawaii/big first birthday connection.

Thanks!

Re: First birthday question

  • this is a PW board, so you won't find many Hawaiian locals here.

however, I'm from Hawaii (born and raised) and I know the tradition you are talking about.

in the islands, your first birthday is a big deal. it is not unusual to do a first birthday "luau". put it this way, on my first birthday, my parents rented out a hall and we had 200+ guests, catered food, tahitian and fire dancers, a magician and a clown.

it's basically a "coming out" and "introducing" your baby your friends (and family). and back in hawaii, we are all family (we call any elder "aunty" or "uncle") so parties are very very common.

are you looking to do a hawaiian theme party or just a huge party like the hawaiians do?

    HTH.

Cool, thanks! (and sorry to sound like such a newb, but what is PW?)

Basically we're planning a big party...it will probably pale in comparison to fire dancers, but it will be big by Seattle's standards. We're renting an upscale conference room at a resort and having a photo booth, catered food, a mock-tail bartender and some other goodies. I'm really excited!

Thanks for the info; I appreciate it...I almost forgot to check back though. Smile
