Infertility

what to do

the hubs and I just finished up our first unmedicated, monitored cycle with the RE. We decided to try a few IUI cycles before moving on to IVF because on paper this should be working. So we're good candidates for an IUI.

I now need to decide whether we should do IUI #1 with Femara and Ovidrel or with injectibles and Ovidrel.

I want to be more aggressive and go with the injects, but the hubs wants to start out with Femara. Thoughts?

Re: what to do

  • is there a reason you aren't starting with clomid?

    This.

Though Nikki I totally understand your desire to be a s proactive as possible.  What does your doc think?

  • I did 4 rounds of Clomid and they were BFN. I am doing my first IUI soon and I am doing the injections.

But I would check with your doc

  • My RE is not very into clomid, she feels that clomid effects to many things where injectables do not. I went straight to injectables for that reason.

Since you do plan on moving onto IVF soon, I would suggest doing some injectable cycles, it helps getting used to some of the shots and also helps the RE to see how well you respond. With monitoring and low dosing you will be able to get a responce similair to clomid, but more controled (meaning you can adjust the dose midway to help with the reponce you want)

    Good luck

A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

  • I say start with femara....it is and oral medication like clomid but doesn't have the bad side effects and doesn't thin your lining.

My reasoning is that if you jump straight to injects and don't know how you respond that you may over respond and have to cancel the IUI.  That would be really sh!tty.  Also, femara is super cheap (like $30 I think) so, you would save TONS of money.  If you don't respond well you can always move to inject the second cycle.

    Good luck!

  • I've already done a Clomid/Ovidrel/TI cycle and the Clomid thinned my lining to 3 (6 is the minimum needed for implantation). So Clomid isn't an option for me again.

this is what I was thinking, but darn it I'm impatient. And we have IVF coverage so they said rather than cancel an IUI cycle they would just convert it to IVF...but Femara just seems SO easy.

  • Clomid is the devil drug.  I don't even know any RE's that prescribe it anymore over Femara.  My OB had me on Clomid for several rounds.  I got a bfp on clomid and TI, but m/c and got a bfp on Femara, ovidrel and TI, but that was ectopic and we m/c.

If you feel you are heading in the direction of IVF, I'd do injectibles so you and your RE know how you respond to injects so your first IVF has less of an opportunity of becoming a learning cycle.  You will want to know how you respond to the drugs.  When I did injects for TI, my dose was really low, like 75 iu of gonal f and then 37.5 the next night.  I wish I had done injects instead of cycles of clomid and femara, but at the time, I was convinced that was all we'd need.

  • I had already done two Clomid cycles that were both BFNs. When I started IUIs I went right to injectables. My first cycle wasn't fabulous since they weren't sure how I was going to respond. I'm in the 2ww for the second cycle now. My RE said it was a perfect cycle. For me, going right to injectables was the right choice. I'm so glad I did. Good luck!
