Mayonnaise?

I read that it's not safe to eat mayonnaise because of the raw egg. Are you avoiding it? I really want to make chicken salad!!

Re: Mayonnaise?

  • Um, no, I didn't hear that and no, I'm not avoiding it

I just looked it up and store bought mayo is fine because it goes through a process that would kill any pathogen that could cause a food born illness

  •  I wouldn't suggest making your own at home for the reason you listed above but anything you buy in the store should be fine.
  • I'm sure whatever you read is talking about homemade mayo - anything you can buy on a grocery store shelf isnt' going to contain raw, unpasturized eggs.

Check the ingredient list and enjoy your chicken salad  :)

  • I've never heard this before.  I'm sure store bought mayo is fine as long as it's kept refrigerated once it's been opened and foods with mayo are kept cold.

A side note:  A few months ago when I was dieting a friend suggested to substitute fat free ranch dressing for mayo in tuna salad.  That's the only way I eat it now. :)

  • Ok, it was on a list somewhere that I read. And if you look at the ingredients of Hellman's mayo, it says egg whites. Mayonnaise and some other sauces are made from raw egg whites.

  • raw egg in mayo?? I've never heard of that, and I'm willing to bet thats bad info. I didnt avoid it in my other pregnancies and certainly not this one. My daughter made it, she's 2 now. And you're looking way to deep into this not eating certain foods thing. think for just a min....if you were to leave egss out, not in the refridgerator, what would happen to them? they would go bad. Mayo, sits out on a shelf, unrefridgerated SO we can infer from the mayo not rotting, that the egg whites are probably cooked up eventually and pasteurized.

Yes, raw egg in mayo. That is how it is made. That is why you shouldn't eat an aioli either - raw egg. Or Hollandaise sauce.

  • Store bought mayonnaise, even though it contains eggs, is safe to eat during pregnancy. Because the product goes through processing, any potential pathogen that could cause foodborne illness would be destroyed during that process.

    From: https://www.pregnancy.org/question/mayonnaise-safe-eat-during-pregnancy

Store-bought mayo is shelf-stable and highly processed.  Homemade mayo (or mayo from a restaurant that makes its own - which is rare) contains raw eggs, and may or may not be made with pasteurized eggs.  Even still, most restaurants are not willing to risk serving raw, unpasteurized eggs in any form.

If you want to skip Hellman's, that's your choice - but it's an unnecessary one.
