Sooo I guess I am a SAHM now?!

I just got laid off :(

I've always wanted to be a SAHM, I just wanted it to be on my time, not because I am unemployed!  I am actually excited though, DD is so fun and I get to spend all day with her.  Any tips from other SAHMs?  How do you pinch your pennies??

Re: Sooo I guess I am a SAHM now?!

  • I'm so sorry you got laid off :(  But hey, at least you get to spend time with your adorable DD! I'm a SAHM right now and DH is still in grad school, so we penny pinch where we can, lol... I shop at Costco (even though it's just two of us and a baby. Costco is great for meat, fruit, and non-perishables. I buy toilet paper and cereal like it's going out of style, lol). But the biggest way we save $$$ is we try and limit how often we eat out. I've had to go no dairy/ soy/ eggs, so the limited diet has actually helped us because it's hard to find yummy things to eat out. We moved apts recently because there are killer deals out there and are actually saving $$, have more space, and live in a nicer place. Another huge thing that saves us money is I plan out our meals for the week and make a grocery list based on that, instead of just going crazy at the grocery store.
  • Sorry to hear about your job.  But hopefully it won't cause you so much stress that you don't get to enjoy the time with your DD.  Talk about a silver lining!

  • I am so sorry. DH and I were laid off last year. Ended up being blessings in disguise. We got better jobs and severance. I would say definitely limited eating out first for saving money. Buy in bulk (Costco) and the fruit/farmers market are best for cheap produce. Call your utilities to see how you can lower them. I was able to get a discount on our directv and got upgraded to the NFL superfan for free. Same with cel phone. We got rid of our house phone. Shopped around for insurance.

If you ever think about getting back into the job market, let me know. I can help with searches and resume.

  • So sorry to hear about the job. I'm glad you can see the silver lining since your daughter is GORGEOUS and you two will have a blast.

I was laid off from my job when the company went into Ch 7 in June and I was about 7 mos pregnant. It has turned into a blessing in disguise for us too. Like some of the previous posts, I have really started using the free time to shop around for groceries, etc. I am also a lot better at looking online for coupons/promo codes when I purchase anything online as well as print-out coupons for instore purchases. You'd be surprised what's out there!

Not sure what you did for a living but I have also had some success finding temporary consulting work which I have been able to do from home on my own time/schedule. Finally, don't wait to file your unemployment claim STAT. PM me if you have any questions but you can do it easily online.

  • Thanks for the advice, ladies.  I am definitely focusing on the silver lining :)
  • So sorry to hear about your job loss!

A place you can definitely save is groceries. Get the weekly ads and coupons and see what's on sale. Then plan your menu around the sales. You can also match the coupons with items that are on sale to save even more. It takes a little time but it really saves money (and time) in the end!

It's on the Nest actually. I access the Bump through the Nest so I often forget they are actually two different sites!

  • Wow.  It's a lot to absorb, but it sounds like you're staying positive.  Good luck.
