Bicornuate Uterus-support

Hi everyone, Just got back from the Emergency room and I could use some support and if any one have any information on this.

I had some really, really, light spotting today and just could not let it be so went to the ER. My HCGlevels have been low since I found out I was pregnant (I am 6 weeks today). The doc. tonight did a another test and my level did go up to a 934 but had been 6 days since my last blood test where I was a 344-so should of been much higher!

At the ultrasound I was told I had a Bicornuate Uterus-meaning it is in a shape of heart, split in two. Never new that could happen...I guess I am the lucky one :( The sac was measuring at 4weeks instead of 6 weeks. It is growing slower because it may be to tight of a squeeze at the top of the uterus.

I am told that my odds are not good-could be a miscarriage and if so after this I will need to see a specialist to stay pregnant.

Anyways-right now I am full of worries and tears and wondering if any one ever heard of any one else with this? Any good news would much be appreciated.

Thank you!

Re: Bicornuate Uterus-support

  • I do not have any experience with this but I wanted to add that sometimes ER doctors are not as trained as your OB and you should definitely follow up. I have heard many stories where women have been misinformed in the ER. I wish you the best!

  • I have not heard about this, but I just want to wish you luck and support!
  • There has been lots of talk about this today (around page 3 or so "abnormal uterus").  In a post below (paging me "ala_1220"), I was talking about a support group we should start.  We should definitely keep up with each other.  So far there are at least 3 or 4 of us on the 1st trimester boards right now!!!

I was sent for a U/S done by a radiologist at my first OB appt. at 7weeks because my doctor wanted to make sure she was seeing what she was seeing.  She didn't tell me about it until my 11week appt.  So, I guess it wasn't that big of a deal.

Try not to stress, even though I know it is hard not to.  You will be at risk for preterm labor, small baby, breech baby...but it was caught early and you will be monitored closely.  Good Luck and keep us up to date!!!

  • THank you everyone! Ala-1220- a support group sounds good. After getting the news tonight I was pretty much told to go home and wait for a miscarriage-so you can see why I am so upset. I have some hope now...I do plan on seeing my doc. in the morning and hopefully seeing a specialist as well. The nurse told me with my age (35) I have no time to waste and I would need to see fertility specialist and would not be able to have a carry a pregnancy full term with out help.  Just what I want to hear.....I want to know what is going to happen NOW with this baby I love!

Good luck to you and keep me posted....would love to have some one to talk to about this let me know how!

  • I'm 35 too with my first baby and a Bicornuate Uterus!!!  We are like twins!!!

Let us know how your appt. goes and I'll pray that you get good news.

  • Thanks but sorry you have this "problem" like me! My only concern is that my levels are not doubling so that is what has me most scared right now. I will be sure to keep you posted....thanks for helping me tonight!

  • I was MISdiagnosed with a bicornuate uterus before getting pregnant (had an u/s because of pain/cysts).  It is very easy to misdiagnose this condition.  That's my first bit of advice.  Secondly, it sounds like your E.R. doc doesn't really know what he is talking about-he's not an O.B.  When I thought I had a bicornuate uterus I talked at great length with a very good friend of mine who happens to be an OBGYN.  She said that LOTS of woman have a bicornuate uterus and never know it, that they would see them a lot in C sections, etc.  My family doctor originally reported the bicornuate uterus to me after my ultrasound and she scared the crap out of me that I might never be able to carry a child to term and needed a specialist, etc.  My friend was furious over this and said that the family doc probably hadn't had any training since "Uterus 101" lol.  Many many women with bicornuate uterus have healthy pregnancies.  There are also lots of good support groups out there on message boards, etc.  Don't give up hope.  Hopefully your OB can give you some better and more accurate info.
  • Thank you EW1403.....I will speak to my real doctor tomorrow. I am thinking that the nurse and the ER doctor skip Uterus class 101 for sure :) I am hoping that they were wrong...no I am praying that they were wrong. I am still in danger due to my HCG levels not rising fast. Thank you again for everyone's support-you have no idea how having someone write and tell you advice or words of support and can really help you when you are feeling so low!
  • I am so glad it provided you some comfort!  I remember how devastated I was when my family dr. told me I had a bicornuate uterus and would probably have trouble ever having children, when nothing could have been further from the truth.  I had to wait 6 long weeks to get in with a maternal fetal medicine specialist who gave me an ultrasound and found no abnormality whatsoever.  She also reassured me that if I HAD had a bicornuate uterus, that I most likely would have been just fine carrying a child to term.  Praying HCG levels keep rising!
  • I'm so sorry that you're dealing with this. You should make an appointment to see your OB right away. They will know much more about how to deal with the specific kind of bicornate uterus that you have. A lot depends on how extensive it is. My SIL had a uterine septum/heart-shaped uterus as well. She and her DH TTC for a year and got pregnant multiple times. I'm sorry to say that each pregnancy ended in an early miscarriage. It was very hard on them, and they had no idea why these miscarriages were happening. After trying for a year, she finally visited a specialist for fertility testing and got an u/s that showed what was wrong. She had an outpatient surgical procedure to remove the septum. A few months later, she got pregnant and carried her beautiful, healthy DD to full-term (had a c-section, I think that was necessary b/c removing the septum meant there was a higher chance of uterine rupture if she had a vaginal birth). She's pregnant again now with #2.  I know this may not be what you were hoping to hear, and I hope that your little one can hang in there. But I just wanted to say that it IS possible for this problem to be fixed and to go on to have a normal pregnancy. SIL wasn't even considered high-risk.  **hugs** to you.

  • I also have an abnormal uterus - mine is uterus didelphys (basicly I have 2 usterus').  I had a MC last fall and found this great blog group with lots of information and amazing success stories.  Hope it helps!

  • I went to the ER weekend before last for severe bleeding. That u/s tech told me I had a bicornuate uterus, too. My OB sent me to a Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist, and after a thorough ultrasound, he concluded that I do not have a septate or bicornuate uterus. Make sure you get another scan by someone who is highly trained (MFMs/perinatologists are a good choice).

I think the ER tech said bicornuate for me because of how my babies are positioned, so obviously yours is a little different circumstance. But try to not worry (much easier said than done, I know!) and definitely get a second opinion.

  • I was just told I have a bicornuate uterus about 2 weeks ago.  I didn't know I was pg at the time.  There are lots of variations.  You could have a septum, but you might not.  The dip may not be very pronounced either.  I have a mild case where I do not have a septum and my dip is not very pronounced.  My doc told me that I am at a higher risk for preterm labor and for a c-section.  The reason for the c-section is the baby may not have enough room to be head down.  She assured me that I would be able to get pg and carry a baby.  Don't panic yet - I did and it just made me feel worse.  Get into your ob asap.  You will have another u/s down and it should be internal.  They may also have to do an mri to get the whole picture.  But don't worry, it will be okay!

  • Thank you Sarah, I am going to the doctor at 1pm today...could not get here fast enough. I am hoping my case is mild, but my numbers are going up very slowly and I my fetal sac was 2 weeks behind. I should be at 6 weeks. So I am not sure if I am already in a worse situation. Thank you and I will update later on!
  • Hi Beth -

I was told the same thing at 5w4d, and the nurse at my OB/GYN told me not to worry and that I'd just be more likely to need a c-section.  I agree that an ER doctor isn't trained like an OB/GYN, so I'm glad you're seeing your doctor today.

I think a lot is going to depend on the position of our babies & the severity of the septum at the top of the heart.  I go for my follow-up u/s tomorrow morning, and I have a Q/A session with the doctor after.  Keep me posted, and I'll let you know when I get more info tomorrow.

I wonder how we go about getting a new board added?  I signed up for the yahoo group, but in all honesty I'd rather stay all in one website.

PM me if you need anything or want to chat!

  • Hello,

I stumbled on your post today and not sure if you are still on here. I recently had a miscarriage and was told by a ER doc that I had a septate uterus. I did a follow up with my doctor yesterday and she mentioned it was either a Bicornuate or Septate and she scheduled me a HSG test for the 22 nd. I am so scared and nervous and just praying for the best and a wrong diagnosis.  Have you learned more about your condition or is there any information you could give me ? I know I shouldn't be getting ahead of myself since I am not even sure what is going on but she seems pretty convinced that its one or the other.
