Infertility

Another Provera question.

I didn't want to hijack MrsKim's thread

I'm noticing everybody else is getting a couple of weeks of the stuff and I only got 5 days. Is this because it's my first dose or is my doctor maybe incompetent?

Re: Another Provera question.

  • I have had different doses, depending on which doctor gave it to me. In the past when I took provera, I was given both 5 and 10 days worth. Now that I am taking prometrium instead, I am given either 10 or 14 days worth.

  • You are too sweet!! You can hijack my threads whenever you want Wink As for the dosing, are you on a higher mg dose per day? I don't know what dose I am (I am at work right now) but I'll check when I get home and post it here. My RE put me on Met (1/day for a week and then 2/day). I started Provera on Friday and I will take it for two weeks. Are you on other medicine that may lessen the effect or counteract the Provera? I think it is odd that different people take it for varying amounts of time but there must be a good reason why the length of time is not standard. You are the first I have heard of taking it for 5 days but I have seen a bunch of women taking it for 1 week. Good luck!!
  • Nope. It's a moral imperative. I can't hijack a thread. LOL. I've got the 10 mg tabs. Not on any other meds and my doc didn't even want to see me before he prescribed it. If I just have a fever and need antibiotics, yeah, call me something in. But something like this....I WANT TO SEE YOU. LOL. It's so frustrating. This is all new to me and I have to stay with my OBGYN for now because the closest RE is 2 hours away. I just feel so stupid because I'm clueless to all this right now.

  • WOW! I would be so frustrated. I am sorry you are going through this. I kinda had the opposite problem, had to fight to get a referral / medicine.  My GP didn't think that not having a period for 7 months was a big deal! At my first RE appt the doctor did a vaginal ultrasound and dx me with PCOS. He then had me take a BUNCH of blood tests to confirm the PCOS. They have me on a weight loss regiment, Met and Provera and I have to go in for appts every three weeks to monitor my progress. I would be so scared if I couldn't get a hold of the RE nurse (I am really high maintenance!). Perhaps you could correspond with an RE via email. I would see the RE at least once to make sure everything you are doing is correct. Have you even had bw done or a diagnoses yet?

  • I was on Provera for 5 days and it was 10 mg also. I am not sure why they put me on that. When I got my script for Provera from my RE it was for 10 days. Wonder if OB's do it differently then RE's.

  • NO! That's one of the things that's so frustrating. When I got "diagnosed" I was 20 and didn't know any better. It was only my second time seeing an OBGYN. I just took his word for it and went on BCP like he said. I did a little research afterwards and conferred that I had the correct diagnosis based on my symptoms. And, he did an exam and said he could feel the cysts, so I trusted him. But later, when we're getting ready to start TTC, I do more research and find out I should've had u/s, bw, and all that good stuff. Plus, studies show the low doses BCP (like I was on) does more harm than good. I felt so stupid! He said nothing about diet, IR risk, weight concerns or anything. That's when I started thinking he might not know what he's doing. And that's also why I'm on here trying to get myself educated by people who've been there Smile Unfortunately, I'm in a small town with 4 OBGYNs who are fixing to all go into practice together...so switching won't really do me any good since I will have to see all of them anyway. Emailing an RE is a good idea. Thanks for that.

  • I agree with MrsKimandlan. I did want to add that even though it is 2 hours away I would highly recommend going to see an RE. My OB just put me on Clomid and didn't monitor me. If I hadn't put my foot down and decide that I wanted to see an RE I would still be with my OB trying to get pregnant. I am so glad that I finally went to see an RE, because I am finally O'ing

It may be worth the drive to go see an RE.

  • I was given provera for 10 days as well.  Your stories sound similar to mine.  After reading on thebump that it's a good idea to get monitored, I called my OB and asked her why I was on clomid w/o being monitored and she referred me to an RE right away.  My first appointment is tomorrow so I'm scared and excited at the same time.
  • I had intentions of contacting an RE if what my OB says doesn't work for me. Even though I don't have high hopes for it, I wanted to give it a shot before driving down there. I agree that it would be worth it. But I wanted to exhaust all my options, mainly so I don't go through anymore than I have to. But at the same time, realizing this is probably only the beginning of my road, I don't want to waste any time. I think I'm gonna check the internet to see if any of those REs have websites, so I can go ahead and be checking them out! Does anybody on here use one in Jacksonville, FL?

  • Like you, I always just took my dr's word and went on about my life, but since we haven't conceived at all without any form of BCP since 10/2005 I finally got my a$$ in gear and stopped holding back on the questions. I've been seeing the same OBGYN for 8yrs and I told her that I didn't want to see an RE and she said she would gladly monitor everything in her office. She is a busy dr too, so I was shocked when she told me this. I guess what I'm trying to say is, ask all the questions you can think of everytime you go to the dr and see if she can monitor you in the office...you never know. ;)

I hope you can get more help from your OBGYN...driving 2 hrs to see an RE just for bw and a 10min conversation would suck!

BTW, each dr is different...even if they are part of the same practice. So, if you dont like what you hear...don't hesitate to get the other dr's opinions.

  • Hi again, I just got home. I checked my rx for Provera and it is 10 mg for 14 days. I am glad that you are going to see the RE - it is better to know in the beginning what your options are then waste a couple years doing something that is not helpful or - God forbid - wrong! I wish you the best of luck and I am sure that we will be speaking often while dealing with these issues! Have a wonderful night and keep the hope!!
  • MrsKim, you are so sweet. Thanks! And thanks to everybody else for the advise, too Big Smile

  • I just finished my first dose and my doctor told me to take it for 14 days.  But everything else I read says 10 days for the first dose.  I am starting to second guess my doctor on a few things though... but 10 days is normal for a first dose.
