We had our IVF teach session yesterday. The RE wrote the pharmacy order and it included both the progesterone in oil injectable as well as a progesterone suppository. The nurse told me it wasn't necessary to do both and that the PIO injectable is very painful. I thought it was strange that she was going against the doctors orders. Anyways, I'll definitely do both if it will increase my chances of the IVF resulting in a pregnancy. I see my RE again in a couple weeks so I can ask him, but wanted to get your thoughts. TIA!
Re: PIO vs. Progesterone suppository???
My last IVF cycle I did both and I will again for this cycle. Last IVF I alternated - 1 PIO one day and 3 suppositories the next day. This time I will do every other day for PIO and suppositories every day.
Some REs feel people respond better to one or the other, so including both covers both bases. The shots don't hurt that bad. They look a lot scarier than they really are.
I don't think it makes a difference which one you do. My IVF 2 years ago I only did Crinone suppositories and I was fine and had DD.
Flashforward to now: I'm using same RE to ttc #2 and doing IVF again. The office told me they changed their protocol and that they wanted me to do PIO for at least the days between ER and ET and then switch to crinone. Initially i was ok with this, but once I started all my stims they were so painful and I was having such a hart time that I told RE I was not going to do PIO basically because I was tired of shots, emotionally drained and i'd heard PIO was super painful.
My RE was totally fine with that and I'm only taking Crinone 2xs a day. I am totally fine with this because as i mentioned earlier i only used Crinone the last time and had DD.
