Infertility

IVF Ladies..Please come in

Our first consultations are Sept 3 and 8 at two different clinics.  Do I need to show up to those appointments fully educated about everything and with a list of questions or do I just need to sit and listen?

If I need to be educated, where do I start?

Also, even if your insurance doesn't pay for the procedures, does it typically pay for the meds?

God...this is sooo hard! Aggghhh!  Thanks for your help.

  • I would educate yourself but not over educate yourself.  I think it is important to know the "basics" but don't over educate to the point where you go in with preconceived notions and aren't fully open to the opinion of your RE.  Here is a good place to start: https://www.advancedfertility.com/ivf.htm

As far as meds being covered, it is hard to say.  It really varies by insurance

  • You should be able to check your insurance's drug formulary to see if the typical IVF drugs are listed. Sometimes they even have a drug search feature on their website. Sorry but I'm not sure what's typical. Mine pays for the drugs and nothing else, but I don't know how common that is.

My RE consults were more like conversations. They looked over my charts and I started with my big questions (IUI vs IVF and how soon can I start treatment). It sorta went from there as a back and forth. I definitely recommend writing your questions down, if you have a few. I forgot a big one at mine - how much it costs!

Be as prepared as possible but try not go into IVF info overload?

  • It's nice to have a basic knowledge of IVF before your consult but if your RE and staff are good, then they'll go over everything in detail and answer all of your questions.  A good website is www.sart.org  and then click on "For patients."

Insurance coverage varies.  My insurance covers meds for IVF and nothing else related to IVF.

    Good luck!

  • My pharm plan did not cover meds, but my medical insurance did, but nothing else.  I have a $5000 maximum and they only covered 40% of my meds.

I was able to get the post IVF meds covered (I am taking the vaginal gel progesterone and Estrace) and my birth control pills covered through my prescription coverage with a small copay.  That saved me about $800 alone!

My IVF OOP including drugs, doc, and ivf clinic will be about $11,000.

There are some very good videos on Youtube and on different websites that explain the proceedure.  You will do fine!

Years of trying and treatment, IVF#1 brought us our darling C!
