Introduction & ob/gyn referral request

I?ve just moved to the Washington, DC area a couple of days ago from Cleveland, Ohio and need to find a new ob/gyn.  I live in the Silver Spring, MD area, but I believe that Rockville or Bethesda is close as well (still trying to get to know the area).  I think that it?s best to find a doctor through word of mouth, but I don?t know anyone to ask yet!  I recently had a missed m/c in June and have been diagnosed with PCOS, so I'm looking for a doctor who is knowledgeable about/sensitive to these issues.   If any of you have a doctor you could recommend, I would greatly appreciate it!  TIA!

Welcome to the area! I really like Dr Gschwend at Contemporary Women's Healthcare...Although the group has merged with another one and is now Capital Women's Care. They have offices in Bethesda, so that should be pretty close to you.

I also see Capital Women's Care. They have two offices in Silver Spring, two in Bethesda, and two in Rockville. Not sure about the PCOS issues, but they have been great throughout my pregnancy, including when we had some scares - I would definitely recommend. Their website is www.cwcare.net.

I 2nd Gschwend. Dr Kleinerman is good too-  she is also at that office. I saw both during my pregnancy. Didn't know about that merge though so I'm not sure what that means in terms of care.

I don't know about the PCOS issue, but I go to one of the Silver Spring offices of Capital Women's Care (the one at Georgia and Dennis). I usually see Dr. Sine, who I love, but recently also saw Dr. Resta, Dr. Band (the younger one), and Dr. Lizardo and really liked all of them - Dr. Band was my least fave of the 3 but they were all very good.

I live in NoVA, so I'm no help on the referral front, but I wanted to say hi and welcome from a fellow Clevelander!  I hope you like it here!

Also - I just noticed your post on another board that I lurk on, and the reason I saw all those doctors I mentioned above was for a situation similar to what you just went through (minus the PCOS issue). They handled it all VERY well, and I would recommend that office even more now having been through that.

    GL!

Thanks!  Although I'm a little homesick, I like it here so far--it's much more exciting than Cleveland for sure.  I think it will be even better once I start adjusting to all of the traffic and learn my way around!

Wow, Capital Women's Group is really popular!  Thanks for all of the referrals and the warm welcome.

I'm sorry to hear that you had a similar situation.  It's very nice to hear that this group handled the situation well.  I've heard some really terrible stories of how other people's physicians/staff have handled these things and the insensitive comments made!  I'm definitely going to interview one of the physicians you recommended, as well as one suggested on the other board.

I never post but I had to say this: I had a very difficult pregnancy (including months and months on bedrest and then a stint on bedrest in the hospital) and the doctors at Capital Women's Care in Silver Spring/Rockville - they are all the same, they just have two offices - were my life-saver. We litterally owe our daughter (and my health) to Dr. Band, Dr. Resta, Dr. Tyau, and especially Dr. Sine and Dr. Lizardo. They are fantastic in every way. Even their front office staff is wonderful!

I'm sorry to hear about your loss and wish you the best of luck!

    Welcome to DC!

I had a missed miscarriage in June of 2006, and my doctor was wonderful.  I see Dr. Ken Travers on Lockwood Drive in Silver Spring.   Their phone number is (301)681-3400.  I would be happy to fill you in on how much I love him if you need me to!!!

FYI: Many of the OBGYNs in the area are Captial Womens Care.  Many independent practices sort of merged under CWC in order to better negotiate with insurance companies maybe 10 or 15 years ago.  They all operate as individual practices.

I adore Dr. Michelle Spector at (big shock) Capital Women's Care (office in Rockville). It was very important to me to have a doctor affiliated with Shady Grove as it's the only level 3 (or level 5... whatever the highest level) L&D ward in the area.

Her office is across the parking lot from a Fetal Genetics testing office, they are an all women group (I know, I'm very 1950s about that but whatever), next to Shady Grove and well connected with Shady Grove Fertility.

Unfortunately I had a very difficult pg. Took a year to get pg. I chart/temp and she was very interested to see/comment on my charts. Saw this as a partnership and was not dismissive of my charting, etc.

Then when we got pg. we thought they were conjoined twins. She sent me to a specialist and as we're walking out she's waiting for us in the waiting room. She'd actually driven over to be there with us when we found out.

We discovered they were identical twins (not conjoined) but we lost them while seeing another specialist. Dr. Spector called on her day off just to talk. Held my hand and told me what a great mother I had been right before my D&C. She was extremely patient answering my DH's MANY questions. She (not the dr. assistant) called DH the day after the D&C to talk to him about how I was doing and if he had any questions about how to support me. At the follow-up she was again incredibly kind, answered questions in detail and offered information on a support group.

I only tell you my long and slightly pitiful story because, since my D&C I've been reading on the Miscar/Preg. Loss board and my doctor appears to be the exception in terms of support and going the extra mile during difficult pregnancies. I hope you won't need that extra support.

I just started seeing Dr. Berger at the same office. Any feedback on the rest of the docs in this practice? Thanks.
