Anyone get out of HSG? (for insurance approval of IVF)

I had an HSG last September. Both tubes were blocked due to a ruptured appendix when I was a child. The test was extremely painful and frankly traumatic. Even my Dr was shocked by my reaction to it.

Fast forward to now. I need insurance reapproval for IVF since it is a year since they originally approved, and they are requiring Day 3 BW and HSG.

My Dr is on vacation and I am left in the position of having the test next week before she gets back or wait/lose a month on the chance I might be able to get out of it once she gets back.

Has anyone had success getting exempted from having to have an HSG for insurance approval? If so, how? and who was your insurance carrier? (I only have one tube left now due to an ectopic, if that matters.) Thank you!

  • My Dr. did SHG instead of HSG and it worked out with my insurance.

I would wait to talk to Dr. about it and maybe he can get you out of it.

  • My insurance allowed me to do a saline songram instead - a lot easier imo.

An SHG is a saline sonogram. They infuse saline and take u/s pix of your uterus. It's usually done to look for fibroids or uterine polyps.
