I posted about this last week. Our doctor finally called yesterday and confirmed that there were no sperm found in the sample. He is referring us to a urologist.
Has anyone with similar results had a better outcome with the 2nd SA? I'm wondering if we are more likely to hear that he has some sort of blockage, or that he actually does not produce sperm. I'm trying to prepare myself. Basically I'd just like to hear some experiences from women who have dealt with this. Thanks.
Re: Anyone with an SA with Zero sperm found?
I hope it is ok for me to respond.....
DH's first SA had zero sperm so our RE had him wait 2 weeks, take showers instead of baths, we changed his multivitamin to a mens special blend and cut back his caffeine intake to one cup a day.
The repeat SA was low and the motility and morphology was bad but he did have sperm with the repeat SA.
Something that I also wanted to mention was that DH had been stung by a hornet earlier in the week and was on a steriod and anti-inflamatory. I'm not sure that this would cause such disasterous results.
Of course...he didn't mention these medications to his doctor. ::kicks DH::
Hi, Omega~
Sorry about your SA results. My dh has non-obstructive azoospermia (zero sperm). He had 2 SA's, blood work, physical exam, and ultimately a biopsy to verify the dx. Zero sperm detected. We do not know why. In our case, our only option for pregnancy is through donor insemination.
Your dh's dr should schedule a repeat SA, blood work to check hormone levels, possible ultrasound, which should allow them to determine whether the azoo is result of blockage or not. If it's a blockage, there will probably be more options. If there is no blockage, a biopsy can be done to see if there are any sperm.
There is an azoo sign in on Thursdays. Feel free to post and ask any questions. And good luck!

My DH has obstructive azoospermia due to missing his vas deferens (CBAVD). He went through one SA and was referred to an infertility urologist, which I think is very important, you want an expert in infertility. Bloodwork, a physical examination, and genetic testing confirmed our diagnosis. IVF/ICSI is our only avenue at this point and my DH had surgical sperm extraction surgery last Friday for my IVF cycle.
The Thursday Azoo check in is so supportive and wonderful. Wishing you the best and hoping you get some answers soon, waiting is the toughest part.
Hey there - sorry to hear about the SA results. I know when we found out we were totally devastated and confused. My DH had bloodwork and an SA done, when the first one came back it was zero. He was then referred to a urologist and had another SA done right before the appointmen - again, zero sperm. He had a physical exam and ultrasound done as well and now we're waiting to be referred to another urologist OOT who can possibly perform a biopsy to determine if there are any sperm present.
We're not exactly sure of our options yet until we meet with this second urologist, which we hope is very soon!!
Your DH should definitely get another SA done and bloodwork to check hormone levels. The levels give a better indication of potential issues that can possibly be fixed.
Good luck!!
I'm so sorry you and your dh are having to deal with this!
About 2 yrs. ago my dh had the same diagnosis and it was devestating. He had several repeat SA all with the same result before we saw the urologist. On our first appt. with the urologist, the dr. got a lot of history from dh and did a little feeling around. He said he could feel the reproductive system and wanted to do a biopsy. At the biopsy they found that dh did infact produce sperm so they asked to do surgery to see if there was blockage. It turns out that both sides of dh's reproductive system were filled with scar tissue and had been severed from a childhood surgery. The dr. was able to repair one side but the other was too badly damaged to repair. We were given a 40% chance the repair would work for us and were asked to wait a full 9 months to see results. Unfortunatley for us, the results never changed.
Our only hope was IUI with donor, IVF with ICSI, or adoption. Last year we worked on saving $ to try the IVF w/ ICSI. We're in the middle of our cycle now. Dh had to go through an extraction process and they were able to get 5 vials of sperm on ice until it's time to implant them.
Has your dh had any sports injuries or surgeries? I know that this a really hard diagnosis to swallow but it's not completely over. While we've certainly had to work hard to have a family, we will still have a chance. Don't give up!
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or just need to talk. I know it's always helpful to have someone who understands. I'm usually on at night, now that schools back in session or you can e-mail me at jaymeiup@hotmail.com.
Hugs!
Thank you so much! I will certainly keep your email and will probably contact you sometime soon. I'm trying to let this all digest. DH has never had any sports injuries (that I know of) or major illnesses. We're pretty much baffled by this whole thing. Today I set up an appointment with an RE and we're going in next week for a consultation.
Thanks again and good luck! I hope this cycle works out for you!!!
We are in the same situation as Craschi and looking to move forward with IUI with donor sperm next year.
