Embarassing question for PCOS'ers

All righty....so PCOS comes with some lovely door prizes, one of which being hirsutism.  I'll admit, I have a bit of a mustache...and beard....and well, it's enough facial hair that I'm really embarassed about it.  I've tried bleaching it but my DH says that makes it more noticeable b/c it's now shiny.  I'm thinking of waxing it (at home kit) and have used Nads for eyebrows before with good results.  My MIL just shaves (I don't think I want to go there).  What has worked for you?  Particular brands you like?  Oh, and I can't afford the laser thing.

Re: Embarassing question for PCOS'ers

  • I am not brave enough for waxing anything other then my eyebrows so I use those creams that dissolve the hair. I use the Sally Hansen brand and have no complaints. But I have to do this just about 2-3 times a week, I feel like a man sometimes and it's so unsexy. Ugh, PCOS is the most unattractive thing ever.

  • I'm glad somebody else asked this question! I was wondering the same thing. I started out with Nair facial hair remover but very soon I had to use the regular stuff (for your legs) every other day! Now, Nair gives me a chemical burn every time I use it. I tried the at home waxing and burned my skin really bad. Being burned is almost worse than the hair. I tried Vaniqua, but my insurance didn't cover it and it was $80. DH didn't want me to get it because it took 3 months to work, you have to put it on twice a day, and there was no guarantee. Oh yeah and there's always the "I love you just the way you are". UGH! I get so tired of hearing that. You can't tell me it's sexy when I lay my head on your bare shoulder and you feel stubble! Anyway, he claimed I could get electrolysis, but that hasn't materialized yet, and probably never will.

  • Clearly, not being able to have a baby now is my least favorite part of PCOS and IF, but this particular piece is such a daily, visible reminder of my problems.  I hate it.  I'm saving up for laser treatment.  For now I use sally hansen wax strips, which work pretty well.  Lots of in-between plucking.  HATE!

  • Honestly, I tried electrolysis for 6 months 10 years ago, didn't work. I can't afford getting it waxed every month (besides you have to let it grow between trips) and I am scared to do it myself. I just end up shaving everyday or so. It sucks, but I don't have the patience to pluck each hair (I have quite a beard).

  • I have a hair issue but not sure if I have PCOS...(I lurk to find out more about it before I got to my Dr)

I've had laser done but didn't see good results and then I went to electrolysis...it takes time but it was so worth it.  I stopped a few years ago and have a few stray hairs that I'll go back for eventually.

It started with every two weeks and by the end I was going every 2 months for touch ups.  It gets costly over time but normally you pay for as long as the session is....I think I was paying $25 for a 15-20 minute session

  • laser worked for me until i started injectible meds... then it all came back... Shaving causes the least issue for me.... all that chemical stuff is horrible for my skin

  • I use Sally Hansen wax strips.  They're about $5 for a box at the drugstore, you rub them between your hands and then press them on your face and rip them off.  Really easy and leaves very little clean-up.  I don't have much facial hair-- just a light moustache that I touch up every now and then, but a friend of mine who has a ton of facial hair tried them at my house and loved them, she uses them all the time/all over her face.

  • I have lots of fine blonde hairs around my jaw line and above my lip.  I also get a few darker hairs that grow longer under my chin.  I never knew what caused it, but now that I've been dx with pcos it makes sense.  So far I have just plucked the longer hairs.  I've thought about waxing but I'm afraid of how bad it will hurt.

Ha, this is how I felt.  I have a creepy long one every once in a while that is super embarrassing (and for some reason I only find it when the tweezers go missing or I'm in the car so have to improvise) but mostly it's just fine light hair with a few dark ones here and there.  I think I'll try those Sally strips, I think I've seen them at the local RiteAid.  I just never thought about it (you have hair on your arms and legs, what's the difference?) until my mom said something one day and then when my NP said that the hormone levels caused my facial hair (thanks for noticing, I didn't feel like crap enough) I decided it wasn't normal.
  • I am so glad someone else brought this up.   I thought I was the only one!!  LOL  i just shave every so days, cuz I have sensitive skin.... and the other stuff breaks me out!!!!
