2nd Trimester

Kaiser and not having one dr.

So I always assumed that when i delivered my baby that MY DR. would be there delivering my baby. However, I was informed last appt. that this isn't the case. I have Insurance through Kaiser so I see a Kaiser Dr. My dr. told me that "whoever" is on call when I go into delivery will be delivering my baby.

I really don't feel comfortable with this and was wondering if anyone else has had any experience with this, and more specifically with Kaiser.

TIA.

Update: I forgot to mention that there are about 12 dr. and 17 midwives that could deliver. So there is a high chance I wont even have ever met this person prior to the deliver rom.

Re: Kaiser and not having one dr.

  • I don't have Kaiser, but I think this is pretty common.  There's 6 doctors in the practice I go to, and whoever is on call will deliver the baby when it's time.

  • I have a thyroid problem and because of that I've been considered "high risk". Although technically its not, that mixed with weight I've been forced to go to an OB that is the only high risk facility in our county. I see a different doctor every week. It sucks. The only upside to that is, I get to meet the different doctors but I can say one is a complete idiot and I've wanted to request that I do not see her at all.

I think it is very common in most practices with more then one doctor that you whichever doctor is on call delivers your baby.

  • Yep that's Kaiser! Most of the time you never see the same Dr twice at Kaiser little alone you're doctor delivering you. There are 2 other drs in my OBs practice and they could deliver my baby but only if my OB is on vacation other wise she never takes so many pregnant patients that she misses her deliveries one of the reasons why I like her chances are really high that she will deliver my baby!
  • Yep its typical Kaiser treatment!!! It sucks because I didn't know that with my 1st baby! And ended up having a tiny little man deliver my baby! And it was the day I was supposed to be induced and I went into labor on my own! So my dr should have been there since she scheduled it!
  • My doctor told us at the first visit that he delivers about 75% of his patient's babies.  There are two others in his practice so I could get whoever is on call.
  • I don't have Kaiser but my insurance allows for the same thing. The hospital has 4 ob's and you rotate seeing them throughout your pregnancy then whoever is on call delivers your baby. I wish I could choose but I can't so I've just accepted it and am trying to see each dr atleast 2-3 times so we don't meet for the first time during L&D.
  • I don't have Kaiser, but was also informed that whoever is on call will be delivering my baby. She said a lot of time first-time moms want to know the doc who delivers, but after that they take anyone who can "catch".

I was kind of worried about this at first, but I'm not concerned anymore.

  • The practice where I go has eight docs, so there's a chance of getting any one of them. They try to rotate docs at office appts. so we get to meet them all beforehand.

  • I don't have Kaiser, but that is completely normal and typical for a group practice.  Any group practice will have one doctor (or more depending on the size of the practice) on call at all times.  The person that is on call is who you get when you are in labor.  Also, please keep in mind that you will spend 99% of your time in labor and delivery with the nurses.  In most cases the doctor will only be with you at the very end when you are pushing.
  • I also have Kaiser. I understand how you feel right now. I'd be more comfortable if I had one Dr. too. The being juggled around is pretty common though. No worries though they all know whats going on because everything about you on is on your chart on the computer if you haven't seen it for yourself already it's all there online. My first baby experience was that way with The Navy hospital & it wasn't so bad. I had a few mid wives & they were great. Can't remember who the hell delivered my baby but I do remember the nurses who cared for me afterward. I am a high risk pregnancy right now so Kaiser actually has me seeing the same 2 Dr.s so far. But I also know they most likely wont be the ones delivering my baby either. This time around I dont remember any of the nurses I'm hoping the people who take care of me after delivery are as sweet as the ones from the naval hospital. Usually the Dr. pops in the room tells you to push & catches your baby as it pops out & then rushes out the door again. You'll probably have so many medical faces in & out of the room from the nurses to prep and the anesthesiologist ( did I spell that right?) and more nurses. But you'll be in pain & just begging for it to be done & over with so you can see your baby & then go to sleep so you wont really care at that point who the hell catches your baby. It's the RNs & LVNs who are the ones who really matter because they are the ones who take care of you before delivery & after & the baby too. The Dr.s are there only if there is a problem and come by to check on you maybe once afterwards. And if there is any need for the Dr. afterwards be assured they know what they are doing. I guess they do this non stop all day long & they specialize in babies & baby delivery so I'm not worried about it because I'd been through this routine before you shouldn't worry about it either. So many women have babies in this same routine everyday I'm sure we'll be fine.
  • I really dont think it has anything to do with insurance, it has more to do with which ever office you go to. ?Most practices now have more than one doctor so the poor doctor doesnt have to be on call 24/7. ?Originally I was going to an office that had 5 doctors in the practice, but when we moved I ended up finding a doctor all by himself so we will be the doctor that delivers my baby because he is on call 24/7 for his patients.?
  • I never met the doctor that delivered my second. I worried the whole pregnancy. By the time it was happening, I just didn't care at all.

This time, I go to a single doctor practice and he has to switch for weekends occassionally, so I could deliver with a different doc. (Chances are I will have a scheduled induction this time though, so not likely)

Unfortunately Kaiser is Insuracne and a hospital. If you have Kaiser Insurance you ONLY go to Kaiser Drs. It's weird!

  • Thank you all for your advice. It really helps to hear other women with the same situation. You all are right....I JUST WONT CARE!!
