just curious at how many months old your child has started talking well? meaning not just repeating words when prompted, but actually initiating communication.
How basic do you want to go? Crying out for mama/dada when she woke up? Maybe 11mo. Pointing out objects she had words for (in books or real life) and saying them without us saying them first, around 12mo (ball! duck! stuff like that).
Or do you mean in sentences? DD's been talking in 3 word sentences since 18mo, but I think 3 word sentences are pretty average for 24mo.
My DD doesn't stop talking at all Anything from singing the theme to My Friends Tigger and Pooh to singing Britney's If U Seek Amy. She points everything out - Mama has Tinker Bell hair (if I have my hair pulled into a high bun) and Baby Kendall's crying.
But, at her 18mo appt, I asked the pedi if there was something wrong because she wasn't really saying much at all. Then, all of a sudden, she just starting yapping away. It wasn't gradual at all and I started to worry because it seemed like she should be able to say SOMETHING other than Dada and Mama. She did a lot of pointing and grunting.
Next thing I know, she's a fountain of words and sentences just pouring out of her.
DD2 is 15mo and she's still not saying anything other than Dada and Mama. She's also pointing and grunting, but not saying a single word.
It was somewhere between 18mo and 2yrs when she started talking up a storm and hasn't stopped since. I happened out of the blue and all at once.
DD's language took off at about 19 months. She was saying random words before that but then she started talking up a storm. Now she learns a few words a day.
DD is 21 months and is far from initiating conversation. She had said a couple one-time words before 18 months, but it's only been in the past month that she's started saying a few words regularly.

She was 18 months when she had a language explosion! Up until then, she would talk, but it wasn't really intelligeble. Now, she talks in full sentences and phrases where she is understood by others 85% of the time.
My own two kids were very different when it came to talking:
DD: first word at 9 months, picked up about 2 words a week from then until 18 months when she started talking in sentences and could talk well. She has always had an incredible vocabulary for her age. She chatters so much that we sometimes have to tell her to give us a break and be quiet!
DS: first word at around 10 months, picked up about 1 new word a week until 13 months, then learned to walk and stopped talking for the most part. He would say the occasional word, but didn't really start picking up lots of new words until he was closer to age 2. He started talking in short sentences the summer before he turned 2. To this day he has trouble putting his thoughts into words sometimes!

Still not talking yet. he repeats words, if we say them phonetically, but that is all.
He has about 30 single words that are understandable.
